Pre-race routine:

got wet. Poured in transition prior. Honestly, I didn't really care. I just did not want to hear any thunder....did not want to get dressed up in my Sunday's finest and not be able to dance.
Event warmup:

got to transition late, so all I did was swim for 5 minutes or so.
Swim
  • 26m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a good swim. Started out strong, than it was all donwhill. I couldn't get on any feet, sighting was just bad, and lost 1-2 minutes getting back on course.
What would you do differently?:

Draft more, sight better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Good T1. nothing special, nothing bad.
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 54s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.63 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a good bike, attacked the smaller hills keeping momentum, and spun up the big climb as it was just too long to attack. This was a grueling, gradual climb, probably similar to the final climb back into LP (but not as long), and if you went at it hard, you paid.

What was nice is the final 8 miles or so. FAST. I was glad I had my 11-28, as I just put it in my 11 and went. Topped out at 42....having that 11 was key, as I was able to pass several people here. Cross winds were high, so one had to be careful, but I imagine people who took the climb way too aggressive couldn't hammer on the way down.

I averaged 280 watts, so my power distribution is getting much much better. Typically I'd be close to 300 watts, but with a similar speed number.

Also worked on legal drafting, which was HUGE. 230-250 watts to get the same speed at 260-280 watts while being out front.

First 10 miles, me and two other guys kept changing position. It was very clean by all involved, the 3 of us stayed an easy 3-4 bike lengths back. I was amazed at the power difference, which made me think two things.

1) I need to do this more
2) Those that cheat and tuck in pace line fashion are scum, and should start getting steeper penalties. I cannot imagine the power savings by tucking in behind 2-3 guys, 3 feet behind the back wheel. It's got to be huge. Not only on the bike, but I cannot imagine what it must feel like to run after 25 miles of biking in a pace line.
What would you do differently?:

Not much....push a little harder in the beginning and on the big climb...
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Good T2 time wise, 8th OA. Could have been a little faster.

What would you do differently?:

not much

Comments:

OK run, not off my best effort, so I'll take it. I could have sucked it up more, but didn't, for some reason. Here is what is really weird, I just couldn't seem to pick up the pace, but no joke I could have held this pace for another 6 miles. It would have hurt, but it was a strange feeling...like no speed, but could have kept going.

Coach says it's IM training, dude!! this is a GOOD sign....your training to not slow down, or slow down less than the next guy. You are not training to go fast!!

This make sense.

I believe her, becasue she basically told me the same thing before the race, "Don't expect to light this course up!"

After looking back and thinking about it, she makes sense. I've only been in the sport for 1 year. This race was my first race ever to the day. So, I don't have the history/training hours to have top end speed while training for an IM.

Guys/gals who have been doing this for 5 years, sure, they can tap into years worth of training.....I can only tap into a year of training. Beyond that, all that is there is the butter and fat left over from being a rather large man not too long ago.
What would you do differently?:

Try and HTFU more at the end....
Post race
Warm down:

It got really hot during the run, so I was pretty heated. Dumped some water on my head and chatted with some folks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Specific training for this distance.

Event comments:

Great race, they just need to get rid of the HEED at aid stations. Stuff tastes like pee on ice. I wanted some type of sports drink, but that cold ocean water makes me want to hurl...YUK! (Probably not the best way to get a sponsor....but at least you'll know when I like something for real)

One of the best post race meals you can get. Full on meal at the Keuka College caffeteria.

So here's the thing about this sport and why it is so great. I wanted to do better today, but didn't. It didn't stop me from having a great time.

I got to see pretty much the whole Train-This team race, in our bad a$$ team kits, that we make look so damn good. High 5's all around. My training partner and friend Matt C. had a bad day, got a flat 5 miles out, rode it in, chased me down on the run, and than we pushed each other hard. Really hard. The kid is a true competitor...most would DNF...not this kid. That was cool.

My coach was the MC for the race which enabled us to hear her voice throughout the race. That was cool.

I met some people who I only knew by e-mail address before this. That was cool.

I got to see my wife race, and my kids flying around all over the place, with my two youngest in their Batman PJ's, with capes. That was cool.

My coaches son got to compete in the kids tri, and I'm not going to tell his story because I wouldn't do it justice, but here's a kid who gets it, at a really young age. That was cool.

I'll be back. Year after year, after year.

This is where it all started for me, and I hope one day, this is where it ends, as I collect my 1st place AG award for the 80+ division....:), and all the Train-This alumni are sitting in a tent, telling war stories, drinking stolen beer, eating nuts, laughing about the rain on June 5th 2010. Granted, we'll all be 80, and Matt C. will be like 37, but that's OK.

That would be cool. That is this sport.
