Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4 am - Freaked Out at the Distance needed to cover and then got my crap together. Started out by sitting in a warm shower to awaken and get blood flowing. Then proceeded to eat some protein (sub sandwich light on any roughage) and then started consuming lots of carbs. Had about 1500 calories over the next two hours.
Event warmup:

The walk to the start alone was enough to get me warmed up. To the start from body marking was approx 3/4 mile and then to get to the back of the line, another half mile or so. Was plenty warm by the time I arrived at my back spot in line. Did some light toe touches to get the hammies loosened but that was about it.
Swim
  • 1h 31m 8s
  • 4224 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was crap. All previous open water swims I had consistently performed this distance in 1:20 but for some reason today, I was much slower. Felt as though I was elongating my strokes and gliding well through the water but realized that I was 10 mins slow getting to the first turn. The one issue I had was some hamstring cramping 2/3 through the swim and when I was kicked. I simply could not get comfortable and was ok limping home knowing that the day was going to be a long one regardless. Was disappointed that I did not swim better - was poor performance.
What would you do differently?:

I think I should stick to wet suit swims until I can more aggressively punch through the water. Will work on swim stroke this winter season to see what I can do to improve my performance.
Transition 1
  • 08m 51s
Comments:

Moving through transition I was more concerned with getting everything I needed, including sunscreen, that I was willing to slow a bit. Got done what I needed to do, got help pulling my tri top on and was off to the races. Did take a moment to eat more and consume about a half bottle of Gatorade prior to getting on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Just move a bit quicker running from swim transition to the changing tent. Probably will leave my bike shoes on the bike next event
Bike
  • 6h 26m 44s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Good race on bike. Was 20 mins faster on second half of race than first and this was all based on effort. I could have gone much harder on the bike but felt comfortable at my speed and didn't want to compromise what I might have left on the run. Bottom line is that I was trained to ride another mile per hour faster but am glad in my first IM race that I came off the bike feeling quite good although my ride was somewhat slow.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder on the bike next time.
Transition 2
  • 10m 40s
Comments:

Simply took too long here - wanted to let my feet quit tingling. Could have moved through quicker but knew that the run ahead was going to be a long one.
What would you do differently?:

Move more quickly and get assistance in putting on sunscreen
Run
  • 5h 04m 14s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out and finished very strong. Had not had stomach start cramping I think I could have performed the 4 hour race I had hoped. Just felt like crap for the first hour or more. Let myself bottom out on the nutrition and struggled until I got closer and could sense the end was near.
What would you do differently?:

Work a bit more on nutrition. I simply didn't know what to expect. I probably had too much solid food on the bike and struggled with that as I started to run. Maybe slow down pace a bit early and then pick up as I felt where my strength was.
Post race
Warm down:

Celebrating with family and friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lack of knowledge of the event and how my energy would hold up late in the race. Knowledge will help me greatly next time around

Event comments:

Great venue. Great volunteer support. Great weather and terrain for the race.

Course: Course was interesting in that it started out in the channel between Towhead Island and the river bank. The water in the channel was very warm and surprisingly was very shallow. Actually stood up as I approached the first buoy and turn prior to heading down the main channel of the river. Water was murky green and chop light in the protected area with increased turbulence out in the main swim area.
