Pre-race routine:

Worked until 10PM the night before so I slept in a bit. Out of the house by 8:45 for what I thought was a 10:00 start. More on that later.
Event warmup:

Parked in the free parking area near the finish. Thout it was about a mile or so back to the start line. Actually two miles according to the Garmin. Ran most of it, walked a little, and got to the start line area around 9:45. Found out the race started at 10:30 not 10:00. Tried to stay loose for the extra time. Found a few people I know so it was o.k.

Comments:

Decided early in the day that I would really try to do something big woth this run. I had a great week of training so I was going to push it pretty hard. The start was chaos like every year. I didn't get a real clear area to run in until about the .75 mile mark. Held a decent pace on the uphill sections, navigated the steep decent without a problem. That left about 1.9 miles of fast, flat streets to the finish. This course is basically my "home field", since I do most of my noon runs along Lincoln Memorial Drive. The only water station I used was at 3.5 miles and then I didn't stop, just took two sips as I ran and tossed the rest. As I turned the corner to the finish, I could see the clock and just busted out a sprint. Passed many people and hit the finish at 43:00 flat. This race uses chip time for official results. Yes it took me 45 seconds to get to the start line and I was in the 8 min per mile corral!!!! When I got home and saw the official time of 42:15 I was soooo excited. Previous best at this distance was 46:11. Almost four minutes for my sixth PR of the season.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. The warm-up was the longest I've ever had for a race, but obviously it helped.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, found some friends and co-workers, chatteda bit and headed home. On the way to my car I saw two IRONMEN, Travis and Sandy VB.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. Getting faster all the time so I am happy.

Event comments:

Great race, great cause. Had a team of runners and walkers from my ad agency office so that made it more fun!
