Pre-race routine:

Picked up Mike, Stephen and Austin and headed in.
Event warmup:

No warmup - hung out with the VFS folks right until the race started.
Swim
  • 15m 5s
  • 766 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Worst swim ever in a tri. I never really felt like I settled in and wasn't moving fast. I went wayyy off course after the turnaround and tried to swim a triangle instead of rectangle. Eventually a boat stopped me and the small group I was following and turned us back, but by then I lost a LOT of time. Last year I swam this in just over 1l mins - almost 4 mins faster!
What would you do differently?:

Wear goggles that won't fog and that have tint. The sun affected my vision dramatically.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Usually I mount the bike with the shoes on the bike and get into them as I get up to speed. Because of the large number of competitors on this course, I decided to run in the shoes. This was a good move, because I wasn't able to run faster than I could in the bike shoes anyway, and I managed to mount the bike and get up to speed very quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 44m 46s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 23.05 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a great ride. Ended up 5th overall despite holding back significantly on the 2nd lap. Only mishap was from being run off the road by a cyclist who cut me off not realizing I was passing at a rapid rate. Had to jump 2-3 inch curbing at 28mph, but managed to hang on and get back on course. Impact knocked my rear wheel off center and caused brake rub and shifting problems for the 2nd half of the race. I managed to open up the calipers and shift to friction on the rear cassette and keep going without too much loss.
What would you do differently?:

Should have gone a bit harder at the end. I think I could have cut another 30-40 seconds off the time without blowing up the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Transition was fastest in AG and one of the fastest overall. I was on the end of the rack.
Run
  • 24m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Not much to say here. I just didn't feel well on the run. Legs felt great, but I was battling nausea the whole time. Not sure if it was the illness I fought off the week before the race or the heat, but I couldn't push the pace hard.
What would you do differently?:

Need to do more speedwork leading up to the race.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental error on swim was the #1 inhibitor in this race.

Event comments:

Solid big race production.
