Pre-race routine:

Had a clif bar, and cheered at the kids race.
Swim
  • 04m 49s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out fast for the first 100m and then slowed down to an easy pace. Was my first pool swim and it went better than I had expected. Passed a few people and was not passed.
What would you do differently?:

Not slow down as much as I did. It was a sprint race and maybe I should have been sprinting more and pacing less.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

long run to transition, with the exception of not being able to do up my chip strap and losing time there it went well
Bike
  • 44m 13s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Coming out of transition I had to stop so as not to run into some of the spectators who decided to cross in front of me. Actually it was a family with a bunch of small kids who decided at the last minute to run in front of me and stop ... then maybe move, and then stop again. Was kind of annoying, but hey at least the kids were having fun.

Once out on to the course, kept a steady pace while checking the HR to make sure that things stayed in check.
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect I might have kept the HR in check a bit more the necessary. The same comment applies here as for the swim: less pacing, more sprinting.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

in and then out, no problems
Run
  • 22m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was good, had lots of legs left just not a great fan of running on grass like that. Running on pavement and/or trails: yes, grass: no so much.

It was starting to get fairly hot during the run, so I took water when I could and found shade when I could and felt sorry for the people who started much later than I did as they were going to have a very hot run.
What would you do differently?:

There is a saying, which to paraphrase goes something like you have the run to make up for the unlikely event that you went to easy on the bike. It turns out that it is not all that applicable to sprints.
Post race
Event comments:

Very good race. Lots of smiles, fun, and it was well organized. Two complaints though, the finish was nice but really hot and almost no shade. I also could have done without the run on the grass.
