Pre-race routine:

Load the van. Load the kids into the van. Get coffee and bagels. Drive. Realize we forgot the kids shoes. Stop at Guelph Wal-mart. Rush into Guelph Conservation Area. Get checked in and rack my gear. Suit up in the wet suit. BREATHE....

Event warmup:

Did a 200m swim.
Swim
  • 17m 24s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

Water was calm and warm (I got too warm in my full wetsuit). I took it really easy and it paid off. I just swam along on the outside of the crowd, keeping a steady pace.
What would you do differently?:

Only wear the bottom part (bib-john) of my T1 suit.
Run up the hill to the transition zone. I lost a good 1.5 minutes there.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

I am always so slow in T1.

What would you do differently?:

Move faster. I'm just afraid that I'll rush so much that 5km into the bike ride I'll look down and notice I'm still wearing my wetsuit.
Bike
  • 53m 31s
  • 30 kms
  • 33.63 km/hr
Comments:

This was a weird course. There were too many bike on the course at once and it was hard to pass. There were little peletons of riders everywhere and it was tough not to draft every once in a while.

I rocked on the downhills and sucked on the uphills. Between my small tri-bike and big arse (200lbs) I could really hammer and drop people on the downhills but they always caught up to me when the hills arrived.
What would you do differently?:

Loose some weight and train hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Run
  • 39m 49s
  • 7 kms
  • 05m 41s  min/km
Comments:

This is where my big ass really turned into a ships anchor. I just started to run out of gas. I had a bad cold the week leading up to the race and my aerobic / running skills really suffered.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran the kids 1km race with my little 2 year old princess. She beat me, but only by a nose.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My big belly

Event comments:

The roads for this race should be closed or space the waves further apart. There were times where cyclists were riding 4-abreast.
