Swim
Comments: My right calf muscle went into spasm on the turn around. It was so painfull. I wound up stopping the swim and I would have sunk if it was not for the suit. I got swam over and screamed under water. The calf muscle just locked. For the rest of the event I was on so much pain. What would you do differently?: Find out what caused my calf to spasm. Work hard at the swim during my training. Now that I have done it once I know what I am in for. I can improve alot Transition 1
Comments: Good transition. First time at an Ironman. So I had help with the strippers. I changed my shorts to my long distance shorts. Might speed this up by wearing them in my suit. Found my bike no problem. Leg hurt but I was able to adjust. What would you do differently?: Get on the bike faster without changing my pants. Not a big deal, but I could have smoothed it a little better. Bike
Comments: Bike was great. Hills that everyone told me to be warned about were nothing. I bike in more hills going up the SFU mountain and on the rides with Marcel. What would you do differently?: Bike more, more weights and more time in the gym. Don't get on the bike with a seized calf muscle. Don't where a new shirt. Transition 2
Comments: Took my time on this transition. I changed my clothes and was able to get my energy bars, and gel's and water bottle belt on. What would you do differently?: No water bottle belt next time. There is enough water and food along the way. While they did not have my bars, gel's or drink. It would be fine on race day I think Run
Comments: first 10kl was all adrenoulin. Then the calf pain over came me. I started to walk. In my head I was thinking ok I can walk a marathon before the cut off time. I was able to run the second half of the marathon What would you do differently?: pay attention to my fluids on the bike. I felt bloated on the run. Find out what happened to my calf to avoid the walk part of it. Train more, run more, bike more, swim more, more weights. Post race
Warm down: Finished, no name yelled out over the loud speaker. No "David McGuire you are an Ironman" just me. So many people at the finish line to meet you. They are all yelling at me. Handing me my metal, my shirt and my hat and bag. Then get in line for the finish photo. No direction to massage, Just needed to find Mandy and get my gear. So I went to my bike and got my phone and met Mandy. Next time stay longer to get the massage and slowly warm down What limited your ability to perform faster: my right calf muscle. Even today September 8th I am still limping. No idea what I did. No time to go to Dr. Have to work. Event comments: My first Ironman. My second triathlon. Truly an amazing day. So much going on, next time I will have a better mental picture of what to expect. This time it was to much of the unknow. I think I can easily shave 2 hours off my time, if not more. Next year is the Goofy Challenge, then I am running across Canada in a marathon a day. Last updated: 2009-09-08 12:00 AM

I brought everything with me that I used during my training to the hotel. My vita-mix, my oatmeal, my drinks, I tried not to change anything. I got to the athletes area and put on my wetsuit have way and then just chilled. I checked everything on the bike, and all my run gear. I used to porta potty about three times in 45 minutes. I then went out to the swim starts.
I did alot of visualization. I tried to see each sport individually. Tried to see the swim, the bike and the run. I then got to the swim start and I did about 100m out and back to get warmed up (or cooled down) and not get the shock of the cold water as I started the swim. I then just relaxed and saw myself finishing. My first Ironman!! I did it.
