Overall Rank = 129/215

Age Group Rank = 17/26
Pre-race routine:

Bagel and GU02 for breakfast, yum, yum. Drove from hotel to the race in the very dense fog.
Event warmup:

Stretched while waiting for the fog to clear. Chatted with fellow tri racers.
Swim
  • 34h 08m
  • 2112 yards
  • 1h 36m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swimming is not my strongest event so I was happy to exit the water feeling good and warmed up.
What would you do differently?:

Grow fins and grow eyes on the top of my head for navigation!
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Everything went smoothly and quickly. Took a few extra seconds to make sure I got everything before I left...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 3h 02m 10s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Wasn't sure what to except since this was my first 1/2 Iron. However, I felt I rode just hard enough and fueled just about right.
What would you do differently?:

More saddle time in training, as always. Only had 8 weeks to prepare so overall happy with the results.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Felt strong heading out of T2...but the heat had other plans....
What would you do differently?:

Not sure
Run
  • 2h 23m 47s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

The heat and sun played a factor for me. All of my long runs were during the cooler evenings so I wasn't prepared. Temperature history of the race is mid to lower 70's, so that's what I was training for.
What would you do differently?:

Train for a more broader scale of weather conditions. Thank goodness it didn't rain, though. My feet blistered bad enough as it was.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around searching for water, but to no avail. Chatted with friends and shared race stories.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Most likely the heat or my lack of running in it.

Event comments:

The fog delayed a good hour or so. Overall a good first 1/2 Iron for me. Did take a tad longer than projected, but I finished so I was happy. Organized very well except for running out of water at the finish. Highly recommended for a first 1/2 Iron race.

The course was pretty fast and flat with the exception of a few hills. All of which, except for one, you could get a good run on it. Kept the HR within range. Forecasted 17-18 MPH average, but was able to increase that and keep the HR within range. GU's, Cliff bar, and GU02 for nutrition. Sampled the official race sports drink, bad idea..
Wind: Little
Course: 2 loops, some very bumpy sections with annoying ruts....especially the out and back on the access road. Gave my nod to those riding a Softride! Though other roads were a dream to sit back and cruise on.

Started off strong, but as each mile passed, my pace dropped. Took all that I had to keep my HR within reason. The water/gatorade stops were a God send!
Course: 2 loops of an out and back. A small section of grass, which actually felt nice under my throbbing feet. Otherwise, a chip/seal surface and paved roads.
