Swim
Comments: Absolutely sucked! I am not a swimmer, have never been a swimmer, and have a very real fear of having my face under water. You can imagine, this isn't conducive to racing! I started towards the back of the heat, and focused on the breast stroke and not hyperventilating :) The weeds, which were determined to pull me under, were not my friends, but the water was shallow and warm, and overall I'm pleased that I survived! What would you do differently?: I'm definitely going to work on my swimming this winter, my fear of water, and learning the front crawl Transition 1
Comments: Was not a fan of running barefoot up the cement stairs and accross a parking lot. It really hurt my feet! But it was set up nicely and I didn't have any major issues. What would you do differently?: Just practice it a few times, since this was the first transition I had ever done Bike
Comments: I may not be a strong biker, but it is my favorite thing to do, and I went out to enjoy it. The hill on mile 4 kicked my butt. I lost my chain and swerved into the ditch, but managed to stay on my feet and not get hurt. I was able to get the chain back on without much difficulty, but it was difficult to get back on the road. There was a steady stream of bikers coming up the hill, and I had to ease into them and start on the hill. It mentally more than physically hurt me, and I was not able to finish as strong as I had wanted to. What would you do differently?: I am going to work on hills and general conditioning a lot more, and work on mental toughness Transition 2
Comments: I was pretty proud of this, because again, I had never transitioned before. I will get my times down though :) What would you do differently?: Lace my shoes faster, and not forget another puff on my inhaler for the run :( Run
Comments: I would have preferred more water, and I wish that they were able to provide cold water. I don't handle heat very well. I forgot to use my inhaler before the run, so I really had to concentrate on my breathing which was pretty discouraging. My legs were on fire!! My calves were cramping up and I was so exhausted. That's what I get for not practicing that combo more I guess. What would you do differently?: I'm going to up my miles and work on my times.I am not a runner, and that is going to change. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish line, hugged my mom, and wanted to cry :) I walked around for a while and did a few stretches before I went to the Luau and ate :) What limited your ability to perform faster: My conditioning was obviously not up to par, and I have to work on my mental outlook as far as pushing through Event comments: I am glad I competed and finished, which was my only goal this year. Now, to start training so I can come back next year and kick some booty!! It was an awesome race, and I can't wait :) Last updated: 2009-09-13 12:00 AM

I work nights, so it was very difficult to get to sleep the night before. I probably got about 4 hours, split up into 1 hour segments with frequent bathroom trips. This wasn't appreciated, since I was sharing a hotel room with three friends who were also competing! We got up around 0530, had a bagel and banana with peanut butter, and headed out the door. Set up the transition and wandered around like the newbs that we were trying to figure things out.
Nervously jumping up and down trying to see if my parents had made it yet. They arrived two minutes before my heat started, so I ran to say hi, gave them my camera, and sprinted back down to the beach.
