Swim
Comments: I felt pretty good with this swim. PR'd it. I wanted to do sub 28 minutes, but I am happy with this. I wanted to draft a lot in the first half, which I did fairly well. I did feel as though I could have gone a little faster going out, but I didn't want to kill myself in the first 5 minutes. So I was cruising fairly well after the buoy. What would you do differently?: I can swim faster. Transition 1
Comments: This is what I really wanted to improve on over 2 years ago at Reston. I PR'd it. I am very happy with this. Although it can still get a little faster. I did make sure my Wetsuit was on top of my T1 bag, but not in it. I grabbed my bike and took off. What would you do differently?: Nothing, just work on this, which I never do. Bike
Comments: I felt like I should have gone a little faster. I PR'd it. I wanted sub 1:02, but I am happy with this. I experimented with a wheel cover that I bought 2 weeks ago. I suppose that it helped, but I also knew that I should beat my time from 2 years ago anyway (1:04:40). I went thru almost a flask of Perpetuem on the bike an almost a bottle of water. What would you do differently?: I rode a lap of the course the day before and probably went a little too hard. Although it was only @ 25 mintutes, I think this was too much for the day before. I was not as rested as I would like to have been. Transition 2
Comments: I had a really good spot in T2, 4th or 5th rack on the right. Couldn't really ask for a better spot. Racked the bike, helmet, sunglasses and bike shoes off. Shoes on, no socks, race belt on, and I'm off. I still PR'd this, but I can get faster. What would you do differently?: Work on transitions Run
Comments: I PR'd this. At first I felt really good. Then at the 1st hill, I felt a little tingle in my quads, then at mile 2, my stomach was getting upset. Possilbly too much Perpetuem on the bike started to get to me. Then the quad cramps really got to me. I took another Endurolyte Pill at mile 2. I knew I could go faster at the turn around, and gave it all I had. My legs were killing me, my stomach was upset. I got up the last hill and felt good rounding the track. No gels, just some gatorade, water, and an Endurolyte Pill. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to not get leg cramps. More bricks maybe? They didn't do this at Eagleman, but at Columbia they killed me. So I guess its the hills. I run hills in Reston all the time, but I guess I need to brick more. Post race
Warm down: Pizza, water, oranges. What limited your ability to perform faster: I felt really good today. My stretch goal was 2:20, with real goal of 2:25. Need to brick more. Event comments: I got 8th in my age group and 44th out of 300 men. I told myself to be really happy with top 10 in my age group and try to PR all 5 times. I did all of this and I feel great about it. Woke up at 4 AM. Light Core workout followed by 5 minutes on the trainer to loosen up. Some stretching as well. Ate @ 4:30 Espresso, banana, bagel w/ butter. Made Perpetuem (1 packet = 2 scoops & a litter more than 1/4 cup water makes a gel flask full). Also had Aero Bottle full of water. Took 2 Endurolyte pills at home.
Left @ 5:15 and drove to High School. Set out my running shoes in T2. Got my chip (there was no one in line @ 5:30). Took my T1 and swim gear in a backpack and rode bike in the dark to the lake. This is another nice little warm up. They also let us swim for a few minutes and I felt pretty good after that. I ate a Hammer Bar once I got to the lake. Took another Endurolyte @ 6:45.
