Swim
Comments: Because I wasn't wearing a wetsuit, the coldness of the water was a shock. Plus, my swimming buddy, my sister, got ahead and I was pinched off from her. Consequently, I was hyperventilating a bit for the first 15-20 yds. When I finally gave up on trying to find sis, I drafted off a girl who was going too slow. I should have swam around her from the beginning. Instead, I waited until we made the turn to go back. Then, when she saw me coming, she picked up the pace, and we swam pretty aggressively to the finish. She got me in the end, though, when we stood up to run it in. What would you do differently?: Stop worrying about where my sister is in the swim! It's nice to have someone to pace against, but not the end of the world if I swim solo. Transition 1
Comments: The transition included a 300 meter run to the transition area. Felt like I got going pretty well during this transition. What would you do differently?: Dry feet off better. My feet were wet and cold during the bike. Bike
Comments: Liked the bike course. I think I might have been able to go a little faster, but I was worried about saving something for the run. This was my first Olympic distance, so I'll do better at pacing next time. What would you do differently?: More interval training, go faster. Transition 2
Comments: The guy next to me put his wetsuit in my spot, and all his gear was crowding mine. Aside from that small irritant, it went pretty well. Run
Comments: Felt really good for the first 3-4 miles. Hit a wall around mile 4, and looked for the finish around every corner. Kept up my pace, though. Also, I walked at every aid station while I drank water for about 20 seconds. I felt like that helped immensely. Saved my legs. What would you do differently?: More interval training. Get faster! Post race
Warm down: Found Rick and the kids, and waited for my sister to run in (she finished about 3 minutes behind me.) Rick took some pictures of us, and then I waited w/ the camera for our other training buddy, Debbie. Took some pictures of her running to the finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall, I think lack of interval training. I really focused on mileage on the bike and run, and I'm determined to incorporate intervals for next season (and off season.) Although swimming is my strongest discipline, I still need to make sure I make the time for it. I only swam once a week during training, which is fine, but I need to make sure I'm putting in the yards (which I didn't always do this summer.) Event comments: 3Disciplines runs a great event. My only complaint was the dinner that was held in the evening of the race. The food was awful, and we spent $20 for Rick to eat, and $14 for the kids to eat, and that was WAY too expensive. Unless they plan on improving the menu for next year, I won't participate in the post race party next year. On the plus side, the bounce house for the kids was a big hit! Up at 5:45. Ate a bowl of cereal for breakfast and had a cup of coffee. Drank a glass or two of water.
Does shivering count? It was cold in the morning!
