Swim
Comments: My last sprint I had a pretty terrible swim, so I wanted to improve on that here. The start wasn't too bad, I went a little wide by choice to avoid the mass of bodies. First couple hundred yards my breathing wasn't great, after that I settled in nicely. My navigation was actually pretty much perfect for a change, I sighted the buoys pretty well. Overall a pretty good swim performance for me. I'm a little surprised it was not closer to 7:30, but maybe the course was a little long as they did reconfigure it just prior to the race. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Transition 1
Comments: I'm slow getting the wetsuit off pretty much always, so I'm actually pretty happy with this time. Other than the wesuit, I did what I needed to do and moved fairly quickly. What would you do differently?: Again not much really, just need to figure out how to get the wesuit off faster and learn how to do the jump on the bike thing. Both cost me a few seconds. Bike
Comments: I gotta say the stock saddle on my Cervelo is kind of an a$$ hatchet, as I was kind of eating my saddle on some of the cracks in the road. Probably too much information, so moving on...I decided to hammer the bike pretty hard in hopes of hitting 23 mph average for the first time in a race. I was a little worried halfway through when my legs felt a little tired, but as soon as I turned for the long straight section back to the park and caught the tailwind I was absolutley flying! Now that was fun riding! There was some other organized bike ride going on at the same time so that was kind of interesting. I didn't quite hit my goal but it was a good ride anyway. What would you do differently?: Hammer just a little harder on the way back to the park. Transition 2
Comments: Another good transition for me, got everything done pretty quickly. I initially ran the wrong way and had to turn around to get to the run out. What would you do differently?: Know the flow of the transition area... Run
Comments: After my swim and bike, I knew an AG award was a possibility, so I kept pushing hard right into the run. Now running is not exactly my strong suit, so running sub-7 min. miles is pretty good for me. I felt mostly good until the last mile, where I think not drinking enough started to catch up to me as it was getting pretty warm. I kept going and passed one more 25-29 guy, which turned out to be for 3rd in AG. What would you do differently?: Do more speed workouts... Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank lots of water and poured some on me to cool off. Packed up my stuff and waited for the awards ceremony. Talked to some folks, got my award, and headed home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Genetics, bad diet the last month or so, and lack of speed on the run. Pretty good effort for me though. Event comments: Given it was mostly college kids, the organization was really pretty good and the volunteers were great and very friendly as usual. Last updated: 2009-09-15 12:00 AM

Welcome to another exciting race report! This being my 5th of the year, I've pretty much got it down to a science :). Let me tell you how nice it was that this was a 10 AM start. I was able to get up LATER than I normally get up during the week and still make the drive down from Waterloo. I pretty much just got up, ate some oatmeal, hopped in the car, and drove to the race site. I drank a big bottle of Powerade on the way down as it was sunny and it's actually been summer-like the past few weeks. Picked up my race packet, put my number on the bike, set up transitions, and hit the men's room for a bathroom break. Talked to some folks, got body glided up, and put on the wesuit up to my waist.
Swam maybe 100 yards or so. I'm not a real big warm up guy, the swim is pretty much my warm-up.
