Pre-race routine:

Got up early and drank some coffee, 2 pop tarts and a banana. Pack up and rode my bike 3 miles to the packet pick up. I had just signed up on thursday and got in by the skin of my teeth.
Event warmup:

Set up transition at the far east end of the tz area. It was very long and skinny. Talked with stmaas, (Steve) and kathleen here on BT. Then rode my bike for about 5 minutes and got ready to go swim a bit. Got in and swam for about 7 minutes and got ready to race. My swimming and biking have been minimal since 5430 long course so I just wanted to be competitive and go as hard as I could and see what happens.

Comments:

SO I have swam only 2 times since long course and thought this would suck. well it did compared to others but not to bad. Ran hard in shallow water off the start and dolphined and few times and got out near the front. I needed all the space I could get. Just swam steady and felt surprizingly good the whole time. Not to many bumps from others. ROunded each bouy well and headed to the shore. Swim had to be short. I don't swim that fast when i am in swim shape. Ok, onto the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more.

Fastest T1 out of the non elites! Had to run a long way to my spot as it was at the far end but only 10 feet from the exit on both ends!

Comments:

Well I did a whole lot better than I thought. First I beat Gordo Byrn on the bike. Yes ex pro! Only 2 pros beat me on the bike today out of 6!
Started out conservative and past a guy who I knew would be fast as he was trying to get his feet in his shoes on the ride. I just ran the 10 feet in my shoes and was ready to ride. SO I pushed past him and and caught Dan O'meara, another guy who I knew would be fast.So here is where it got interesting. SO I pushed hard past both of them and Stephen Dupree,(the guy getting his shoes on, he is also the national champ in my agegroup at duathlon and was wearing his worlds outfit with his name on his ass.) So anyway, every time I saw his shadow behind me I would speed up as to not let him pass. He did pass me 2 times and Dan also past me 2 times. I was thinking, how the hell are these guys keeping up with me. I was pushing hard the whole time and did have the 3rd fastest time of the day. WEll the draft marshal came up behind me after both had past me and said something to me. I could make out what he said. He drove up to the other 2 and said something to them also. Well it turns out they were both drafting me and both got penalties. actually Mr. Dupree, worlds guys got 2 penalties so a total of 4 minutes! Ha!! He must have drafted me twice. I re caught them and they kept repassing me until the end where I got into t2 first. Great ride!! the course was way shourt btw! I am not that fast!

So I couldn't get my damn shoes on to run in. Still had the 2nd fastest t2 behind the pros.
What would you do differently?:

get my damn shoes on.

Comments:

So my feet felt like stumps because my feet were a bit cold. So I just tried to hold a good pace with quick cadence. GOt to the first hill on the way out and Mr Dupree catches me and goes by like a rocket. Tried to stay with him and kept him in sight. Next was to keep Dan o'meara behind me and now track down Ed Oliver who was also in my agegroup. Pushed hard and caught him at mile 2. Tried to surge and put some distance between us. I did! Then got to the finally hill and I got a really bad side stich. Tried to breathe on the opposite side and I had to slow down. Heard Ed coming, I thought ok I will let him catch up and recover a bit and out sprint him. Turned to go down hill which was about .2 of a mile and went hard. He caught me with 50 meters to go and I pushed harder and so did he. Well he beat me to the line. SO I was thinking I was 3rd in the agegroup. Well the drafter got bumped out and I ended up 3rd. Couldn;t have gone any harder. That is my story and I am sticking to it.
What would you do differently?:

Not lose at the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, walked around and chatted with people and talked to Gordo Byrn. Nice guy. Got my award and headed home with my wife. She drove over to watch. Saw Susan and Ted and that was cool too. Ate a sandwich and a coke and chips.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training. Pretty damn happy considering.

Event comments:

Fun race in my back yard. Darrin and racing underground put on a great, low cost event. We even got cool sweat shirts!
