Swim
Comments: So slow! It's because I don't stay close to the boueys and instead, hug the outside and avoid people. Got to stop doing that. Happily, though, for the first time, I did not have to rest at a kayak or stop because of calf cramps. I felt my right calf starting to cramp and I just relaxed and took some deep breaths and tried to not think about it, and the cramp went away! Yeah progress! What would you do differently?: Swim the 2.4 course instead of swinging so wide and adding extra distance Transition 1
Comments: Not a bad transition considering my usual bathroom stop and the funny IMWI run up the parking garage ramp into a building. What would you do differently?: Pee in the water - I really need to get better at that! I just always use the restroom after the swim! Bike
Comments: I was going so great, and on track to come in around 6:20, but then, the cable for my big ring stopped working, and then the chain hopped off twice, and then I got a flat, and then my derailleur came loose and got caught in the gear and I crashed. And had to limp along at a lame slow speed to the next aid station, where the saviors/mechanics made it into a fixed gear - middle ring in the back, and I could switch between the big and small ring on the front. And away I went to do the final 40 miles, with a lot of standing up. What would you do differently?: Buy a better bike that does not break. Although, some of the forced rest, and coasting when I spun out going downhill probably saved my legs. And I may have ridden and run faster because I was determined and ticked off. Transition 2
Comments: Riding the helix standing up the whole time is not fun. Another bathroom break too. Run
Comments: I ate more during this race then I usually do. I walked and took something from nearly every run station - something I never do. And I think it was a really good idea. I just kept thinking - one more mile, and reset my watch - 10 more minutes. I never thought 26.2 or 40% done. Just focused on the next mile. And I felt soooo awesome! What would you do differently?: Nothing - this was the most fantabulous Ironman run I have ever done. Thank you Durapulse coach Nick! And all the fans cheering! And thanks to myself for really putting in those long difficult draining workouts week after week after week Post race
Warm down: Checked in with medical tent - because hit my head when I crashed and had some nasty road rash. Ate pizza and subs. And wandered around downtown Madison trying to figure out where the heck I had parked the car. What limited your ability to perform faster: Dang brike breaking. Event comments: Awesome race - I highly recommend IMWI. The course is not that tough so long as you train on hills, and it is so well supported, interesting and fun. The fans are terrific - you are a local celebrity for a few days. Last updated: 2009-09-16 12:00 AM
