Swim
Comments: Swimming is my strongest event, so I was disappointed when the shortened the length to 300 from 500. I felt great on the swim. The first buoy seemed to come so fast. After the turn I passed lots of people which boosted my confidence. Leaving the swim I was running near people who looked like they were in great shape which made me feel great, also all of the people waiting for their waves to start were very encouraging. What would you do differently?: Knowing now that my swim is decent, I think I would push to be in the front half of the group next time so that I don't have to waste time going around people not swimming freestyle. Transition 1
Comments: Running right out of the swim felt fine, however I was a little dizzy when bending over to put my shoes on so I slowed down, drank some fluids, and made sure I wasn't going to pass out leaving the transition area. What would you do differently?: I left my glasses in my helmet on the ground. The air temperature change in the morning made lots of dew, so they were completely fogged when I put them on. I'll keep them on the bike, up off the ground next time. Bike
Comments: I was expecting to take a lot longer on the bike. The adrenaline and competition pushed me. It felt great to finish in just over an hour. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was much smoother than the first. Run
Comments: Walking up the hill was a must for me. I also was feeling some sharp pain in my hamstring, but I pushed through. The benefit of the hill was that I got to run all the way down at a decent pace. What would you do differently?: Running is by far my weakest event. I knew I would have to walk some, and I figured on shooting to run under 15 min miles. I was very pleased to run just under 12 min miles. This was almost exactly the same time I got on my 5k race in July. Post race
Event comments: The post race could have been better. I also was very disappointed to find at packet pickup that the largest size sweatshirts they had to give were XL. Last updated: 2009-09-18 12:00 AM

This was my first race. You should know a little bit of background. In January at 406 lbs I made the decision to take my life back and got exercising. My first goal was weight loss, but also to run a 5k. After the 5k in July I started riding a bike for more variety and quickly set my sites on my first tri. I had lost 80 lbs and weighed 326 lbs the start of the race in September.
I tried to set up to make my transitions to be most efficient. I didn't really practice this, but I was just trying to finish the race, so I wasn't worried about shaving a few seconds. The real story is that when I first lifted my bike on to the cable a HUGE RAT (probably the size of a full size football) almost walked right up my leg. It was standing next to my tire no more than ten inches from my feet. This I thought could possibly be a bad omen.
I stretched some and did a little swimming. The water was warmer than the air, I would have "warmed up" until the start if they let me, but I had to stand in the cold air for about 15 min waiting for my wave.
