Swim
Comments: Good swim, felt good, was swimming really well. breathing good. took in some water a couple of times. Was outpacing a couple of people in front of me, but everytime i caught up with them, i could not get through. I would start cutting between, and would get cut off by the guy breast stroking and hit with the feet by the other guy. Tried going around but got cut off again. happened 4-5 times until i rounded the bouy and headed back to the beach. Probably could have shaved 45 secs off swim time. What would you do differently?: Don't get cut off and/or swim around. Maybe start middle of pack instead of trying to hang back too far. Otherwise, good swim for me. Transition 1
Comments: Good transition, ran in cap and goggles already off. socks on, shoes on, sunglasses on, helmet on, gel in pocket, and off. Ran to out with shoes on and mounted bike. What would you do differently?: nothing, unless i learn to go without socks and leave shoes on bike. Thinking i would probably need some tri bike shoes though. Long run out of transition, so probably could have picked up some time by leaving shoes on bike. Until then, good transition for me. Bike
Comments: Good ride out and back. Got up to speed, passed people all the way out and back, got passed a few times, mostly by folks on tri bikes or with aero bars. Watched HRM and paced pretty well, tried to keep HR down since hadn't been feeling well all week. Avg about 15.5 - 16mph out and probably 19-20 back. Kept good cadence and gear, took in fluids (which helped on run), overall good ride. Pushed just hard enough. Rode more than half the ride on drop bars. Tried to stretch legs along the way. Right arm got a bit numb from drop bars. Took gel on bike after 1/2 point. What would you do differently?: Get some aero bars. Not be sick. Push a little harder on bike. Transition 2
Comments: Not a very good transition. Got off bike, ran into transition, got to rack and everyone elses bike was in my way. had to push them over to make room to rack mine. They must have been in earlier wave. Racked bike, helmet off, keep sunglasses on, shoes off, run shoes on, race belt, G2 bottle, head out. Got all the way close to out of transition and forgot watch. Run back and get watch to monitor HR on run. Costs at least 1 min, probably more. What would you do differently?: Not forget watch off bike. Learn how to get out of shoes before coming into transition. Run
Comments: Not a bad run for me. Tried to stay cool, keep HR down. Didn't want to over do it, so ran at easy pace, walked a bit at water station and turn around 1/2 way point. Didn't cramp until about 200yds to finish. Had to stop and stretch a sec, then picked it back up. Not a bad run for not pushing too hard due to head cold. Glad i brought my run bottle with G2, needed it. Water cups were at 1 mile and 2 mile marker, but they were very small. Was wishing there was water at turn around too. Was getting hot. Overall not too bad though. What would you do differently?: Need to work on run time. I think I can show the most improvement here over the winter. Just need to be faster. Other than that, nothing much. Post race
Warm down: Walked after finish line, drank water, sat down and rested for a bit. What limited your ability to perform faster: The head cold the previous week really got me. Was only at about 90%. Other than that, my fitness and ability were my on limitors. Took in enough hydration, which helped with any cramping. Event comments: Overall good race. Would definitely do it again. Wish i had felt better the week before. Probably would have turned in a better performance for me. Last updated: 2009-09-21 12:00 AM

Was sick all week with a head cold. Didn't get a chance to train since the previous Sunday. At race time, i was still about 85-90%. Decided to take it a bit easier, wore HRM to watch HR and exertion.
Started prep for race 2 days before by hydrating with G2 and water. Staying consistant with hydration, also because i was suffering from head cold.
Race day: Woke up at 3:45am and drove to race with wife from Gulf Shores. Left about 4:30am and arrived around 5:40am to race site. Ate bagel with peanut butter on the way. Picked up packet and then drove over to park at transition. Got everything ready on bike, then headed to transition with gear (bike shoes, socks, bike bottles, run bottle, run shoes, helmet, sunglasses, goggles, swim cap (orange), 2 gels, Garmin, HRM, Road ID, run hat, ear plugs). Set up transition similar to first tri, but only brought a small towel this time for feet, instead of big towel. Got marked with # 797, then walked around and checked out transition in/out, finish line, and beach with wife. Drank some more water had a mini clif bar, then gel 15min prior to start.
Walked around and stretched out legs. Walked down to beach with wife, then got in water to warm up around 7am. swam out and back, probably 200 yards to get used to water. Good temp, not choppy, clear & smooth. nice out. Came back and it was about time to head over to the swim start area. Stretched a little while waiting on my wave to start.
