Swim
Comments: Swimming was the one event that i focused on for training for the race; by far my weakest link and i was proud of the fact that my time in the race was only a little over a minute slower than my time in the pool! My goal was to stay with the pack and not have any groups that started 3 minutes behind us catch up - passing a few caps from the heat that started before us was also a confidence builder What would you do differently?: Stay a little closer to the buoys Transition 1
Comments: My first ever transistion; i had no idea what a good time is - just happy i didnt get hurt during it and i got my socks, shoes and helmet on just fine... What would you do differently?: Maybe find ways to get through that a bit faster - i'm thinking eventually i could deduct 30 seconds from my transition time without risking injury or forgetting something Bike
Comments: I am not a biking fan (actually not a swimming or running fan either - what am i thinking????) - don't even own a bike. I was planning on borrowing a neighbor's mountain bike until a family friend got word of this. He lent me his hybrid bike and i am now grateful for that! I felt strong the whole race and even stronger during the hills - passing many more people than those who passed me - biking did not take much out of me What would you do differently?: Buy a roadbike - it's on my list of things to do and i will own one before my next race - not going to break the bank on it, probably look for a pre owned one from someone looking to upgrade... Transition 2
Comments: The only thing i did was forget to put on the shirt that i had pinned my race number bib on - i chose to do that rather than mess with pinning it on while trasitioning - my chest would have been bloodied up bad! i wasnt that far away when i realized i forgot it, so that didnt cost me too much time... What would you do differently?: Buy a belt from all 3 sports that holds the racing number Run
Comments: at about the 2 mile mark, i started cramping a bit, all i could think about was how grateful to everyone who advised me to make a sprint distance be my first and not an Olympic - i've got lots of work to do before entering one of those...When I saw my race results time, i was very pleased with my pace during the run. What would you do differently?: just worn a belt that held the bib rather than another shirt - it wasnt that comfortable Post race
Warm down: grabbed a water and powerade, sipped both, walked a bit to try to keep from cramping too bad; also snacked on a banana What limited your ability to perform faster: I wanted to be a little cautious to keep from getting an injury (if i got hurt, no way my wife would ever let me do another one!) Event comments: Such a great experience as this was my first one! Me and my friend Aaron both did this race with our goal being to finish in an hour and a half and we both accomplished that! I was very pleased with my time, considering that it took me only 7 minutes less when i did these distances as a practice at the gym the week before - of course this was in a quiet, peaceful pool, and on a recumbant bike, and a treadmill...cant wait to do my next one! Woke up, fed our dog, took dog out, made a protein shake, double checked having packed everything up, went out the door - 1 hr drive to the race
Stretched out, walked around, tried to stay loose and keep my nerves under control - this was my first ever TRI and one goal i had was not to barf - before, during, or after!
