Event comments: This is a great race and I am hoping to get more folks psyched to signup in 2010. The website is TriColumbia.org. These are the folks that also put on the Columbia Triathlon, the Eagleman, and some others; they do a phenomonal job. I've done 9 Ironman races now, and about a dozen 1/2 Iron distance races. I've done a bunch of M-DOT, including Hawaii, so I feel like I have a good handle on what other venues are like. Here's why I love the Chesapeakman. Well run and organized. Everything is kept real simple. Volunteers are awesome. Small race -- no huge crowds to deal with - -but enough racers to keep one motivated. Logistically easy venue -- if you are at the event solo. Park your car right at the finish (at a local high school) -- Take a 5 minute bus to the start. Plenty of parking / No long walks with gear / well equipped / plenty of post-race support in the High School's gym. Swim Course is tough - choppy water / current / windy -- this is a negative in my book since I am not a swimmer. Bike Course is flat - excellent pavement -- lots of wind -- unbelievably gorgeous venue through wildlife refuge -- very very little traffic. Run course is three loops -- flat -- aid stations are every mile. Excellent venue for running. Host Hotel -- Hyatt -- is fantastic -- other lower costs venues are readily available - I've also stayed (in a previous year during the Eagleman) at a great cheap bed and breakfast within a 1/2mile of the Start. Great race to have a PR at. It's always windy here; this year we had 30mph winds (or so I am told); a few years ago the temps were around 90 + but this year it was a cool 65-70. Happy to say more if people are interested. Last updated: 2009-09-29 12:00 AM
