Total Time = 5h 24m 5s
Overall Rank = 763/3318
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 144/370
Pre-race routine:

Ate my usual bagel with blackberry jam and peanut butter and coffee
Got to Transition by 6:30, set up my transition area.
Shuttle to swim start, light banter with other triathletes.
Body marking done the day before.
Picked up my timing chip and used the facilities.

Event warmup:

None. Cut it way too close.
Swim
  • 31m 42s
  • 2143 meters
  • 01m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

Need to be careful not to veer too far off course. Swam almost all the way to the left of the course by the buoys and had to swim much further to get to the water exit at the end. The swim went a lot quicker than I anticipated, Jay beat me again on the swim, he had a much better swim and finished in 29 min. Still a much better time than i had hoped!!
What would you do differently?:

concentrate on not swimming off course!!!
Transition 1
  • 04m 38s
Comments:

Took way too much time in Transition, I was worried that I would forget something. Did not have the shoes attached to the bike because i didn't see the need to have a super fast transition.
What would you do differently?:

I should have had a faster transition!! No reason why I shouldn't have done it in less than 3 minutes because I was NOT tired at all after the swim.
Bike
  • 2h 48m 5s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall decent bike effort. I definitely could have gone MUCH harder, but I feel that the bike speed that I maintained approx 20mph did set me up for a great run.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time running longer distances and do more track work next time. i was unable to get much distance in the weeks prior due to pain/injury in my right knee. Actually got it injected by one of the Ortho PA's the week prior to the event.
Transition 2
  • 04m 38s
Comments:

BS'd around in T2, when I got back i found out that my towel was COMPLETELY COVERED in ants!! My shoes, in turn, were full of ANTS. I spent the better part of my damn near 5 min transition time banging out the ants from my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

spray towel with bug spray if transition is in the grass in the future.
Run
  • 1h 54m 12s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Quads were screaming for the first 3 miles, resolved completely thereafter. Kept hydrating and eating shot bloks every 25-30min. Was able to finish strong (fastest pace 4:30 down the chute)
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing, perfectly executed negative split with a 9:07 initial half, followed by a strong 8:17 for the second half of the run. Will work on sustaining a faster pace.
Post race
Warm down:

sat down too quickly upon realizing that my left 4th toe may be broken. . .lol. Super tight afterwards, ate a banana, drank plenty of high quality H2O and ate some domino's. Stretched a little and went back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

need to use a long course tri suit with a decent chamois, experienced severe perineal pain and later found out I had completely rub myself raw.

Event comments:

GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH MY FIRST HIM, WOULD DEFINITELY DO THIS ONE AGAIN. THE SWIM SET ME UP FOR A GREAT RACE, GOTTA LOVE THAT FAVORABLE CURRENT!!! I feel that I raced pretty smart but everything seemed to work out pretty well. Next time I will have a definite plan for nutrition which is something I kinda guesstimated when I needed to eat/drink and just got lucky. I'll work the nutrition thing into my training runs/bikes next year for my first IM.
