Pre-race routine:

We went straight to the race site when we got to Savannah to see the lake and check the water temp. We were greeted by Alford Hitchcock's birds! They covered the entire parking lot. When we drove into them, it looked like we were a plane in the sky flying along with the birds. I cringed at the thought of the amount of bird droppings in the water! I knew I could not do that swim without swollowing some water. I'm germophobic and would rather swim in a vat of snakes then with the droppings of a gazillion birds!

It even says NO SWIMMING!

All day long my training partner and I kept looking at each other and cringing at the thoughts of the nastiness of that water. Later when we went back for packet pickup, we were told that the swim was canceled because the water was unsafe. I felt like a deflated balloon after that. After cringing all day about the nasty water, now we whine all night about the swim being canceled! This was very disheartening. What fun is a Tri without the swim? It's not even a triathlon now, it's a duathlon; run, bike, run. Nothing to be done but to make the best of it.

This race also included a Halloween costume contest. The costume had to be visible during the run segment of the race. So I decided that Cheetah Girl would make a second appearance. I planned to swim in my cheetah print shirt, have my tail attached to my run belt, then just grab my ears for the run.
Event warmup:

Jogged about a mile and stretched.
Swim
  • 08m 20s
  • 1760 yards
  • 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Ran 1 mile in 8:20.

Since our swim leg was canceled, we ran 1 mile instead. It was difficult to get around slower runners on the narrow path around the lake.
Transition 1
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

With no swim, all I had to do was change my shoes. I was a little clumsy getting clipped in.

Bike
  • 43m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 18.09 mile/hr
Comments:

I think I did about the best I could. Maybe could have pushed a little harder since this was a flat course. I don't have enough leg strength to efficiently use my pedals for both pushing down and pulling up.
What would you do differently?:

More biking and more strength training for stronger legs.
Transition 2
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

Changed shoes again, grabbed cheetah ears and ran.
Run
  • 27m 41s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I rate this as my worst race run ever. This was a miserable run. I was overheated, legs were heavy, and I simply felt that I had nothing to give it. I felt resigned to just make it to the finish as best I could. I should have been capable of better and was disappointed with this run.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure why I felt so bad other than the very humid heat, or improper pre-race nutrition?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat and humidy.

Event comments:

Despite the swim being canceled and the miserable run, I came home with not one, but TWO first place prizes!

I won first place in the costume contest, which was a $100 gift certificate to TrySports!

I also took first place in my age group and received a trophy!

It just goes to show you that placing has little to do with performace and more to do with who else happens to be there that given day.
