Pre-race routine:

Had whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter and honey. Left home at 5:00 am Closed my eyes and listened to a race day mix on my i-pod on the way down to Lake Worth. Got to the venue at 6:00. It was still dark & they couldn't put lights on b/c of the turtles. Was glad I brought a flashlight. Set up my bike and laid out my gear. Went back to the car to relax.
Event warmup:

Not much. My running shoes were in the transition area with my bike. Next time I'll know to bring an extra pair or just wear mine until closer to race time so I can jog a bit.
Swim
  • 18m 8s
  • 437 yards
  • 04m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Everyone on the beach who had done the race before said that the swim looked really long and that the bouys were out farther than they had been the year before. I don't know if my distance calculations were off during my training swims, but I had never taken more than 12 minutes to go what I thought was a 1/4 mile. I just had to relax & keep breathing and moving my arms.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time in the water during training sessions.
Transition 1
  • 03m 54s
Comments:

I know this was pretty slow. But since it was my 1st race, I didn't want to stress out too much during the transitions. Also, I couldn't get my watch into the stop watch mode. I spent some time messing with it and then gave up. I did somehow manage to set some sort of alarm which went off every few minutes or so & drove me crazy during my ride & my run.
What would you do differently?:

Try to do everything a little faster. Make sure my watch is in the right mode when I set up in the morning.
Bike
  • 42m 13s
  • 11 miles
  • 15.63 mile/hr
Comments:

I know that I can ride much faster than this. The U-turns really slowed me down and it took me awhile to feel comfortable passing other cyclists. I also was trying to make sure that I didn't use up too much energy before the run.
What would you do differently?:

I will definately ride faster and pass sooner. I also need to work on my U-turns so I don't feel that I have to slow down so much.
Transition 2
  • 03m 28s
Comments:

Very short stretch from dismount to transition area. I just unclipped and ran in my shoes with my bike.
What would you do differently?:

try to do everything faster.
Run
  • 29m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I met my goal pace which was anything under 10. I may have been able to push myself a little faster, but I just wanted to be sure I would be able to keep running all the way to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on increasing my pace during training so I can run faster next time
Post race
Warm down:

None. Posed for pictures. Went out to Denny's for breakfast with family and friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of race experience. Just need to keep training.

Event comments:

I think that this was a perfect race venue for my 1st triathlon. The volunteers were very helpful and so were the other racers.
