Swim
Comments: ot off course a little. At the start, got a kick to the eye, so left goggle was full of water and apparently eye is black and blue. NICE. Well, sighting was good to first turn bouy, but after that it was rough with one eye and every look up was into the sun. What would you do differently?: Just need more swim practice and my HR would be a little better. Maybe spend winter working on bilateral breathing and sighting. Transition 1
Comments: I am slow in T1. High HR doesn't help. Not being ready for the long swim doesn't help. I have practiced many times, but when I am breathing so hard, I tend to slow it down a bit. Hurts my T1 time a lot, but might help my bike a little. Doesn't show, cause my bike is slow, but might be worse. What would you do differently?: More time swimming=feeling better and moving faster in T1. Bike
Comments: My avg. speed for the Intl. was faster than my avg. for the sprint course back in the spring. Maybe training and riding actually does help. Now I just need to do it more. What would you do differently?: Just spend more time riding. I got passed by too many people who didn't look like strong cyclist. Going up mediocre hills and my speed was down to 13-14mph. Winter riding time should help by next year. Transition 2
Comments: I stink at transition. Did struggle a little getting bike on the rack. I was in the back back back corner, so that probably added about 5 seconds. Not that it makes a difference, but it gives me something to make an excuse about. What would you do differently?: Nothing, get better prepared, get in better shape and you won't struggle as much running to T2 and out of T2. Run
Comments: My goal was a first lap of an 9:15 mile pace. I think it was close. Gotta figure out what 6.5mph is, cause thats what my watch said. My left thigh kept tightening on the uphill and would get better on the downhill. Was nervous about it, but I pressed on and it never locked up completely. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I am actually happy, other than the disappointment of missing my 1 hour mark by 2 freaking seconds. At the beginning of the season, I doubt I could run 6 miles, now I can race it at a time slightly slower than my 5k. I will take it. Run more over the winter. Post race
Warm down: Walked back to wife and kids. Swung by food tent on the way, so I brought them banana, pizza, and cookies. I drank some gatorade, water and picked at the food. Just walking around and walking to the car. What limited your ability to perform faster: First Intl. distance, so lack of experience and first ever workout of 3 hours was the reason I was unsure of pacing. Just need more long distant rides, runs and swims. Who would have thought. Event comments: Perfect weather, everyone was great. Had a lot of fun. Last updated: 2009-10-04 12:00 AM

First race not traveling with the fam. I got up at 0600, grabbed grear, loaded bike and made the 1 hour 30 min drive south solo. Wife and kids were driving down about an hour later. I got to the race site at about 0815 and was the 2nd car to park on the gravel road. Hadn't checked in, so I made the long trek and checked in, got marked and set up my transition. I was in the corner closest to the water, so it was easy to find, but a long run to the bike exit.
At about 9, I went for a jog, came back, stretched, got some drink. Met with the wife and got wetsuit on with about 15 to start time.
