Pre-race routine:

Since the race was nearby, we were able to "sleep in" a bit before packing up and heading over. This was Richard's first duathlon relay, and I was kind of glad not to be riding the bike for a change.
Event warmup:

About a 10-minute very easy jog, testing the foot, and getting a sweat on.
Run
  • 27m 9s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Results have me listed as the fifth fastest relay runner on this first leg; however, the guy they have as 3 minutes faster than me...I passed him. I know I did. I saw him come in and his wife leave on the bike after Richard. Not sure how that worked out!

Anyway, my start was squirrely as I was too far back, but it was okay since it was an uphill start and not charging up it probably saved me. I got into a good strong groove and just started passing people. The day was perfect for running. Cool and crisp. I bet it was cold on the bike, though, being all sweaty.

I was hoping for closer under 27 minutes on this run, but it is one of my fastest 5k times of the year. So, okay.
What would you do differently?:

Get a better start. Push harder and trust my fitness...except I kept thinking I had another mile to run.

Comments:

Richard did reall well for someone who had only ridden his bike sporadically. I wasn't sure whether to expect him in 45 minutes or an hour. He came in right around 50 minutes (official time was 52:07 and that counts both T1 and T2).
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 09m 4s
  • 1 miles

Comments:

Ouch. I really thought I was running faster. (Note, though, that the dude who supposedly beat me by 3 minutes on the first leg [and didn't] ran a 13 minute final mile. So there.)

It was kind of a tough run with that uphill at the begining again. I was heaving and blowing and just trying to move faster the whole time, telling myself it was only 1 mile.
What would you do differently?:

I probably should have done some light jogging while waiting for Richard to return. I was afraid I would be on the wrong end of the road, though.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nada.

Event comments:

The relay teams were all lumped together for the awards (men, women, and mixed). Didn't really seem fair. Otherwise, very nice event, good course.
