Pre-race routine:

Drove to Pajarito Ski Mountain
Event warmup:

Stood around looking at all the super fit people wearing shirts that says Hardrock, Leadville, Wasatch and though "Uh, this is not your usual local race crowd." My wife asked someone about that and it turns out only the hardcore mountain runners tend to show up for this particular race.

Comments:

This is a race that I will put on my annual event calendar. It was awesome!
What would you do differently?:

If I were really training for this event I would have spent a lot more time training on steep trail. As it is I am training for the Javelina 100 mile endurance run, which does not have steep trail, so given the circumstances I wouldn't do anything differently.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit to keep my legs from tightening up. Put on some warm clothes and had a bagel and water. Took care of some other business then ran back out to meet up with my wife and ran in with her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of steep trail training.

Event comments:

For as small a race as this was it was extremely well done and the scenery just can't be beat.

Performance: Good
Course: The route is a lolly-pop with a six mile loop and nine miles worth of out and back. The course starts at just over 9250 elevation and drops to just over 9100 in the first mile. After that little warm up it climbs to just over 10500 elevation in the next two miles. We then drop back down to 9250 over the next two miles and the course then rolls back up to 9750. The trail drops 250 feet in a quarter mile to take you to the turn around where you have to tear a page out of a journal and turn it back in to the next aid station to prove you ran the full out and back. The course then rolls back down from 9750 to the start at 9250 with a little quarter mile of uphill at the end. The course is probably 80% single track, 15% cross country ski trail and 5% fire roads. It is also spectacular. The run goes through an old growth pine forest mixed with aspen, which are changing this time of year.
