Pre-race routine:

PB&J on drive to event. Freaked out about slow leak in rear tire and had the Mavics guys replace it with Vic's moral support.
Event warmup:

Short swim.

Comments:

So insanely glad it was not raining. Very happy when I got to straight, flat(ish) section and realized I was going faster than expected. After mile 20, started getting a little uncomfortable in saddle. Stopped midway through for Portapotty and to exchange water bottle. After mile 40, was really uncomfortable and really ready to be done. Also, they added some hills at the end, which was not so awesome. Overall, though, did better than expected.
What would you do differently?:

Not be a big wimp and brake on downhills. Learn how to exchange a water bottle without stopping. Find a way to not have to pee.
Transition 2
  • 05m 57s
Comments:

So happy that I was done with the bike and was really going to finish that I got a little teary eyed in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 2h 15m 14s

  • 10m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt surprisingly good starting out and was running like 9-minute pace. As time went on, though, took more walk breaks, first at water stops and then also at uphills. My last mile was my fastest, though.

Drank at practically every water station, took sponges when offered and put them under the brim of my hat, and took snow from the hockey team and put it in my hat all four times I passed them.
What would you do differently?:

Try to not walk when I got to hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Water. Hug teammates. Beer. Too much wandering around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fear on bike, which led to using brakes too much.

Event comments:

Terrific, well-run race with really challenging course. I would do it again if it were just earlier in the summer.
