Total Time = 2h 50m 28s
Overall Rank = 103/109
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 15/17
Pre-race routine:

Got up and showered (to wake up and to steam my lungs). Ate 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a glass of water. Got to the race and set up my transition area.
Event warmup:

Minimal calf stretching.
Swim
  • 13m 22s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

My swim had definitely improved from the same race in June. I shaved off almost 2 minutes. My breathing was smooth and my stroke looked better this time (from what my support team told me).
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. My swim is improving.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

Since it was so cold, I had to take time to dry off, put on cycling pants, base layer and top layer.
What would you do differently?:

Race in warmer weather.
Bike
  • 1h 38m 4s
  • 21 miles
  • 12.85 mile/hr
Comments:

I was freezing! I knew that the bike would be tough due to the cold temps. I was beginning to lose my energy level. I took a GU at the turnaround point. That gave me some energy, but not enough for a great bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not race after a week-long cold.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

I didn't even have the energy to run with the bike. I really considered quitting. I thought, "Katie, it is only (at max) an hour long run/walk. You cannot quit!"
What would you do differently?:

Run with the bike.
Run
  • 59m 2s
  • 4.7 miles
  • 12m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I walked over half of the run. I ran in increments of 5 minutes, then walked for 5 minutes. I was just trying to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Run the entire segment.
Post race
Warm down:

2 puffs on the inhaler and a bottle of water. Stretched my calves a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Having a terrible cold the week of the race.

Event comments:

The volunteers were great! There were so many! They were even at the entrances/exits of a gas station on the outer road. They would stop the cars coming out and onto the road when riders were coming down the road. There should've been more volunteers on the run course. Even though the course was somewhat marked, I saw several people running the wrong way, then realizing it and running back to the correct turn, etc. Overall, the race was great! I improved on the swim and run (although I don't know how I was 2 minutes faster on the run) compared to the same race in June. The weather was pretty cold, but thankfully, sunny. I will probably do this race again next year (but hopefully without a cold!)
