Swim
Comments: started well but quickly had issues sighting due to some minor fog in goggles. seem to do ok finding buoys but tended to round them rather wide. once i started catching waves the sighting really suffered b/c i couldnt tell if a saw a buoy or a swim cap b/c people were all over the place. on the way back in i got really wide right b/c i sighted the exit wrong and had to swim an extra 50m or so along the shore to get to the exit. What would you do differently?: get new googles for big races!!!!!!!!!! Transition 1
Comments: ran really hard to my bike but once i go my suit off i struggled to get my arm warmers on. i also decided to go with socks and run in my shoes since it was cold out and the grass was wet. lost a good 1min in T1. Bike
Comments: started off just right to get the legs going and at mile20 todd gerlach passed me like i was standing still. his wave started 10min after me so i thought damn i am going too slow. i started to pick it up but he just rode away. i continued to push on the bike but overall my legs felt really defeated. i couldnt wait to get off the bike by mile 30. the last 10miles on 969 was a slow uphill into a headwind which really was deflating. and once we finally got near T2 we went up a little climb that caused my quads to start cramping. What would you do differently?: i really need to focus on big gear training over the winter. i promise i will b/c otherwise utah is going to eat me alive. Transition 2
Comments: not too bad but with my cramps i couldnt run very fast. i also needed to switch socks and then i put my gear back in the transition bag so i lost some time here again. Run
Comments: for having cramps i really nailed this run. had i not had cramps it would have been several mins faster. everytime i tried to open up my stride to really go my quads would really cramp. i still managed to keep the legs pumping and i think only one AGer passed me the whole run. i feel i did a great job eto manage to cramps by taking several salt tabs along with lots of g-rade which i never drink. i also had a gel flask with lots of salt in it that i would hit right before the aid station so i could chase it with water. my first lap really flew by and the 2nd wasnt too bad but the third really hurt and i was fighting back a #2 really bad. funny thing about the #2, the night is over and i still havent gone. back to the run, i did forget to drop my arm warmers in T2 after i tucked them in my jersey on the bike so i crammed them in the rear of my shorts and did the whole run like that. i probably looked like a dropped a load in my shorts. What would you do differently?: nothing Post race
Warm down: food and drinks! What limited your ability to perform faster: bike training leading up to the race Event comments: great race! this was a first class event that really catered to the athelete and their family. i will be back next year if i am not in kona. i guess i will do this race again in 2011 :) Last updated: 2009-10-17 12:00 AM
