Age Group Rank = 68/473
Pre-race routine:

Ate a huge breakfast over 3 hours before. Then nursed on a sports drink up until the race. This seemed to work well with everything being digested in time.
Event warmup:

Stretching and just relaxing.
Swim
  • 18m 1s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

The current was pretty strong by the time we started. I didn't swim out toward the middle of the river, where the current was the strongest, so I feel like others were getting more pull. I also seemed to go too far to the left and was told to move over. It felt a little tight once we were all bunched together.

I'm happy with my swim since I didn't feel panicky at all. I just stayed relaxed and paced myself.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more in the current
Transition 1
  • 04m 24s
Comments:

I didn't feel comfortable doing any sort of running start because it was pretty cramped, and there was a tight corner.
What would you do differently?:

Practice changing in order to cut down on time.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 39s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty rough road, and it gets pretty tight with so many people. I used rubber bands to secure my water bottles along with duct tape, and that worked well.
What would you do differently?:

I still want to be faster, but it went well.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Really tight and steep dismount area. Someone almost crashed.
Run
  • 47m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

It was a really neat run. They closed 72nd street, and there were people everywhere. It got pretty hot, but there were hoses along the way.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't stop at all from cramping, but my stomach was still sloshy. I ned to figure out how to stop it, but I don't want to cut back on water on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Joined up with the family and went out to eat. Didn't really do any stretching, which isn't so good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definitely should have been faster on the swim, but I'm not sure if it was just from people being better or if it was the current.

Event comments:

I really liked this race. Streets were closed, everything was very organized, and it was a really cool experience. I supposed I do have to say that it is a little frustrating how crowded and tight everything was. I know it's New York City, but it is a little tough trying to maneuver around everyone on the bike. All in all, it was a great experience.
