Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 2am and couldn't really get back to sleep before my 4am alarm...Ate some cereal and got my stuff together.

My sister dropped me off at transition around 5:45 and I got set up. I realized I had a lot more "stuff" then everyone else had in transition. Something I need to work on. Just afraid I would forget something...

Rode the shuttle to swim start and picked up timing chip. Had a Clif shot and stood around in the rain.
Event warmup:

Didn't do much but stand around the coral. Chit chatted with folks. Saw my family for a sendoff before what was I thought would be at least 6 hrs of pain.
Swim
  • 28m 41s
  • 1960 meters
  • 01m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

When I jumped in, it definitely seemed chillier than 75 degrees. There definitely a strong current. When you tried to wait before the horn, you clearly were being pulled downstream. Awesome for me, because I suck at swimming.

First .25mi I was trying to find a rhythm. I struggled and had to breathe every 2nd stroke. Finally the wave opened up and I was able to settle down. Got into my rhythm and rode the current down.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out a way to be calm the whole way. Guess if I practiced more it would probably be easier. The current definitely helped my swim time.
Transition 1
  • 04m 51s
Comments:

I just wanted to stay under 5min. With all the stuff I had, wanted to make sure I didn't forget anything, especially nutrition. Had to pee, but figured I would just hit the first portajon on the bike course for less crowding.
What would you do differently?:

Slim down the transition.
Bike
  • 2h 57m 24s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.94 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought it was a decent bike for me, but the overall rank disagrees. I could feel my quads from the start for some reason, but did not worry. The burn went away after about 15mi, must have been feeling it from the swim? I hit the first portajon at 17mi for a quick leak. The rain started to come down soon after that. I took it easy on the sharp turns but I pushed it just enough across the whole course. I had to hit the portajon another time out on the course. Clearly had enough fluid in me, and hoping I didn't overdue it for the run. Came off the bike feeling pretty good. The rain definitely helped keep my HR down.
What would you do differently?:

Build a stronger base!
Transition 2
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

Still just wanted to stay under 5min, so I'm satisfied. Also super glad I decided to turn my shoes upside down on my towel. They stayed dry during the downpour and got no blisters on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Need to stay light.
Run
  • 2h 00m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Turned it back up on the run. Started out kind of fast for my liking, but calmed down around mile 7 or 8. When I started, my dad said I had a good bike time. I asked him for my overall time so far, and he said he would find me on the run and yell it at me. Later around mile 4 he yelled out 3:34, I was stunned. I was making great time, and I knew I could probably bust a sub 2hr halfmarathon.

I seriously felt great until about mile 9. My stomach started hurting a little, and my pace slowed. I just pushed through it.

Overall I only walked at water stations. Didn't sub 2hr, but got pretty darn close.
What would you do differently?:

Not much

Had a great time. And very glad I could share it with my parents, sister, and grandparents!
