Pre-race routine:

I had pre-pinned all my Gu to my shorts, so all I had to do was eat a banana and go to the bathroom. (I am so sick of bananas at this point). Then my brother-in-law and my husband (not racing) took the blue line with a gazillion other racers to millenium park.
Event warmup:

Stood in line for the porta-potties, then went to find my husband and discovered porta-potties without lines. Darn it!

We then tried to get to our pace group (4:30), but weren't able to fight our way through the crowded start to get to them. Aside from the sign off in the distance, we never ran across them in the run.

Comments:

Very cold start. I had strips of fleece wrapped around various parts of my body and a thin jacket to keep warm (too cheap to throw away more real clothing than I have to!) I didn't end up discarding these until about mile 18, but I tend to be cold all the time.

I was a little bummed that we never found our pace groups, as we ended up starting at less than a 10 minute mile, then falling to about an 11/12 minute mile pace in the last few miles. But we did have a porta-potty break and walked all the aid stations, so I'm okay with the time we pulled.

I was feeling good until about mile 14, when I started getting shooting pain in my right hip, which tends to happen to me on crowned roads. I kept running though, but ended up slowing down a bit. Was very unhappy by mile 18, but my brother-in-law was still running, so I had to keep up!

I'm so glad ChinaTown was where it was, because the amazing crowds of cheering people and huge amounts of energy totally gave me the boost I needed to keep going.

I really didn't want to stop at the last few aid stations because it was like someone was stabbing an ice pick through my quads every time I had to start running again, but my Brother-In-Law needed fuel at that point. In all honesty, I was going so slow at that point that I could have probably kept running and he would have been able to catch up to me.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not walk all over Chicago the day before.
Post race
Warm down:

My legs seized up immediately upon crossing the finish line, so I grabbed some food and sat down to try and stretch it out. Then we went and got some Chicago-style pizza!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

couldn't find our pace group. I'm good with that though :)

Event comments:

All of the spectators and volunteers were amazing at this race. It was a ton of fun, despite it being sub-arctic temperatures (okay, not really, but I HATE cold weather). Only thing that puzzled me were the occasional aid stations placed about half a mile away from each other. But I was always able to find water when I needed it so it wasn't a big deal...just confusing.
