Swim
Comments: this swim was terrible. my time for a quarter mile is usually at or below 6 minutes, to give an idea. to start there was a pretty bad trench of just chop, as is usual along the jersey shore. then, when they had us turn and swim parallel to the beach, we were past the breakers at that point, but there was a sandbar further along on the course which caused the waves to break. I got absolutely wrecked by one wave and got swept towards shore by probably 10 yards or so. Another couple of times I had to turn almost perpendicular to the course and dive under the white water. Then of course the waves didn't seem to want to carry me inward. What would you do differently?: Put up a seawall. Transition 1
Comments: I still don't know how people start with their shoes already on their bike. It just confounds to no end. What would you do differently?: Can't think of anything Bike
Comments: This was my fastest bike split ever. I was so happy with my bike in this race. What would you do differently?: Brought water with me, I got a little cottonmouth going into T2. Maybe push a little bit harder. Transition 2
Comments: I couldn't get my feet out of the shoes, because my hands were a little numb. I got one of the shoes unvelcroed but I couldn't get my foot out or the other shoe undone so just said screw it and jumped off the bike when it was time. What would you do differently?: Not ride as fast so the headwind on my hands wasn't as strong? Nah, it wasn't a big deal. Run
Comments: I came out of T2 in 2nd place, but I quickly made it into 1st place overall for about a mile and a half, but the other guy was right behind me for a good part. I kept thinking "either he needs to die off or I need to get a second wind." I think the former is what happened. As I got closer to the turn around and began to hear footsteps again, I thought, "well, this is where my inability to run a 5k in the 16s is going to catch up." Then the eventual practically sprinted past me right after the turn around. When I turned around, I also saw the first two duathletes were right behind me. That definitely provided some motivation to push harder. The week before I miraculously ran an 18:30 5k, which is faster than any 5k I ran in high school cross country, and I think it was rather hard to top that again. Also, I thought I was going to puke around mile 2.75, and did a couple dry heaves at the finish. No fun. What would you do differently?: Weigh less than 185 lbs. Post race
Warm down: sit on the beach for 15 minutes What limited your ability to perform faster: The waves. Event comments: I wanted to go below 50 minutes on this race and possibly win. I came close on both, but the 50 minutes wasn't going to happen with that swim. And I can handle 2nd place. "Win a triathlon" will just have to be a goal for next season.
