Run
Comments: I paniced a bit after the first mile at 8 min, descided to pick up the pace and the second mile was 6:17. Ugh it turns out the first mile was likely long and the second mile was short. I settled in and tried to pick a comfortably hard pace. The miles through 10 went by pretty easy and without much discomfort. I was feeling that my fitness was much better than I'd anticipated. The hills in miles 10-12 are always very challenging, and affect you physically and spiritually, the desire to race hard after them is greatly diminished. I just tried to focus and relax for the last 4 miles and felt I kept a respectable pace, and didn't implode at any point during the race. What would you do differently?: Do some runs at my target race pace, so I could get a better feel from mile 1 what it should feel like. Work on more hilly runs, did some, but I don't think you can ever do enough for a course like this. Post race
Warm down: Walked back to school, for food and water. Fatigue and cold, didn't really need a warm down. What limited your ability to perform faster: Carrying about 10 pounds more than I should. Training seriously for about 3 months, in a year or more I'll have adapted more. My pacing in the first several miles was inconsistent, and it took. I sort of forgot I was racing and not just doing a long run at the beginning. The significant hills require special training. Event comments: A well run and organized race particularly impressive how many volunteers they get for a 16 mile race in Jan in NH. Last updated: 2009-11-04 12:00 AM

Ate a pre race meal of Oatmeal. Had 1/2 a peanut butter and bananna sandwich 1 hour before the race. Might have eaten too much. Had some stomach cramps during the race.
18 minutes of easy running. Didn't want to get too sweaty, so my clothes wouldn't be wet for the race and cause me to cool off.
