Swim
Comments: So going into the swim I had high expectations after Donkeyman! I started off to the back of the pack to make sure I could get into a rhythm easier. for the first 100 or so it worked well, after that.....well it went down hill. The chop started to pick up and got really fun trying to breathe, even with bilateral breathing I still managed to get mouthfuls of lake water. As I approached the first turn buoy, the speed boat which was checking on participants decided to wake me and everyone else around me. I got thrashed around by the wonderful wake and pushed into the turn buoy and kind of under it. I kicked out hard and struggled to get into a rhythm again. Then the chop continued to mess with my breathing but I struggled through it and made it to transition. What would you do differently?: Hmm, probably practice more in rougher water conditions and avoid large speedboat wakes..... Transition 1
Comments: Good T1 considering I havent practice transitions at all! Suit came off with no problem and got all ready to go! What would you do differently?: nadda Bike
Comments: Overall was a great bike for me! I decided to go all out on the bike because right now that is my strongest event. I was maintaining a decent cadence and speed, and was passing people left and right (which was a first for me! Really proved that my winter bike training had helped!). I was feeling so good about halfway through the bike that I upped the pace and really kicked the gas......until I realized that I lost my gels on the swim/transition. Tried to get as much as I could from my nutrition in my bottles but that did not really cut it. What would you do differently?: have my gels on my bike already! Transition 2
Comments: Well as I dismounted I kicked off my bottle and had to go chasing that down, grabbed the water and headed into transition. Racked my bike and grabbed the gear and off I went. What would you do differently?: not kick my water bottle? Run
Comments: Overall it was a piss poor run! I met up with Craig on my way out of transition and grabbed one of the gels I lost and downed that hoping it would help. My legs and body felt like crap and really never got better at all. I got out onto the run course and just crashed. I attempted to DTFU but the body was not having it for some stupid reason.....I made the turn and slowed down to drink some water and asked Josh how he was feeling after his bike crash. He went on ahead and I struggled through my run. Got to the last mile and made myself go a little faster but again had to continue the run walk shuffle. Came to the last quarter mile and just pushed it to try and finish strong, came through the finish and that was that! What would you do differently?: make sure I have back up nutrition available and just DTFU!! ;) Post race
Warm down: walked around and grabbed some water. Checked the results and then decided to pack up the gear What limited your ability to perform faster: lack of practice in rougher water, lack of nutrition on the bike, and lack of nutrition on the run from the bike....and most of all MORE TRAINING IN GENERAL!! Event comments: the swim course left a little to be desired, had to watch others to figure out just where to go! Overall, a nice race, just wished there would have been more aid stations in general! Woke up at 3:30am and ate some PB and a bagel. Washed that down with some coffee and gatorade. Packed up the car and headed out on the open road. Stopped for some gas and a little more coffee and officially began the trek to Lake Mills!
set up transition, got marked, picked up race packet, bike for a quick spin to make sure all as well (good thing too considering my chain fell off!) Went for a run and then donned the wetsuit! Headed on down to the swim start and chatted with Craig, Jim, Amy Jo, Rich, and Ben and just relaxed.
