Swim
Comments: Felt like I was going to throw up most of the swim. Weird. Drafted nearly the whole time, found slow legs to draft off I guess. I used brand new goggles and they leaked, rolled over 3 times to get the water out. As a result my left eye was cloudy when I got out of the water and I could not see well until 5-7min on the bike. What would you do differently?: Not use brand new goggles. Not draft on slow legs. Transition 1
Comments: Ran with shoes on since I was unsure about the rules for shoes on bike. What would you do differently?: Maybe grab a gel. Bike
Comments: The hills were numerous, I only stood one time, otherwise I was able to sit and ride up the hills. I do not care for wet, curving descents. I sat up on quite a few and rode my brakes, I did not feel like crashing. I saw two people that had wiped out and probably 10 flat tires. My chain came off once, but I quickly got it back on. I rode consistently and my own race, but I just went too easy. What would you do differently?: Not be so conservative. I tried to stay within a very constrained watt range. Looking at my "Work" total I rode way to conservative. The goal was 190watts. Hills make it hard to pace, kept numbers down on the uphills, but then you get a lot of 0-120watt numbers riding the flat and start of the uphill again. My sure my bento box was secure. I stopped before getting on the course to try and secure it. The velcro was not working. Two of the four straps were working, at one point I was down to 1 strap. Tried to fixed it while riding often. It basically just hung to the side. It held my flat kit. I consumed: Almost a full bottle of Gatoade 3 large mouthfuls of water 1 Almond snickers 2, maybe 3 gels. Transition 2
Comments: Ran in swapped my gear and headed out. What would you do differently?: Not forget Garmin. Ran 200yards or so before realizing I did not have the unit. Went back and grabbed it. Run
Comments: Started off great. Plan was to go easy first 3 miles and then up the pace to 7:45 until mile 10 and then drop to the 7:20 range. Stopped to pee at the 2nd aid station as well. Instead I ran consistent until mile 10 when I died out there. The last mile I was totally out of it and just trying to hang on. I felt awesome the first half of the run. Felt good until mile 10. What would you do differently?: Bring something to drink or start Gels earlier. At the 2nd aid station I tried some Cersport, nearly puked and had a cramp for about a mile. It faded. Tried Cerasport again at the 4th aid station, same result. From there I was pouring 2-3 cups of water on myself at each station. Drinking a small amount of water, and then consumed about 2 cups of Coke the rest of the race. Had only 1 gel. Had they had Gatorade I think I would have done maybe 10min better. Not even look at Cerasport. Post race
Warm down: Drank a bottle of water. Chatted to Bobby for a minute. Drank a Muscle Milk. Got some art. Laid down. Packed up transition. Got a massage (very long and great). Sat around. Ate some food. Drove home. What limited your ability to perform faster: No idea what was up with the swim. Never have felt like I would throw up during a swim. It was calm so I was not getting thrown around. Conservative bike pacing. Little to no nutrition on the run. Overall I did well, not as well as I had wanted but I still did pretty well. My results: http://iifvaweb1.iifdata.com/QuassyJune2010/Athletes/Results.aspx?r... Event comments: Awesome event. Outside of the Cerasport, I can not say a single bad word about the event. Stayed at a local hotel. Carbed up Friday. Ate well at Olive Garden on Saturday. Got to bed at a reasonable hour. Woke up had two cups of coffee, a bagel with PB & Honey and a croissant the same. Drank some Gatorade and water on the ride over to Quassy.
Got all my gear setup, and swam for 20s.
