Swim
Comments: Thought I had a pretty good swim here but the time does not reflect how I felt. Clearly something was not right with the swim for everyone at the race. I was just disappointed in my split b/c I was already digging out of a big hole compared to last years result. What would you do differently?: As always, try and find someone to draft off of. Transition 1
Comments: Fairly solid considering how slow I usually am. Bike
Comments: Pretty pleased with my bike - better than last year and I didn't feel great for the first 15-20 miles - legs felt tight and weak with no extra push but that subsided and I was able to turn in a good bike. I did drop my EFS bottle cruising at 23-24+ and had to do a U-turn to go back and find it - luckily I did and it was fine. A bit bummed about that but I did best I cold to make up for lost time. I am happy with the bike and thought I played it smart - stretching, sitting up and leaving something for a really good run.....so I thought.......... What would you do differently?: Nothing really - feel better at the beginning? Transition 2
Comments: Not a terrible transition here at all - always want to be faster but I am pretty pleased Run
Comments: And I thought I'd be alright with this.....man was I WRONG!!! Reflecting back I can't be disappointed with this performance considering the heat and the fact I don't train my body to respond to a hard LONG run coming off a hard long bike. Thank goodness Ricardo was running with me for the majority of the run b/c it would have been extremely difficult to go it alone. He caught me just after mile 1 and we ran until mile 10 - from there he flet good and I couldn't bring myself to push with him any longer. I hit every aid station and used tons of ice and water plus some timely shots of Coke. I did continue to drink my PowerBar flask but alas I just couldn't force my legs to turn over. Stopped more than a few times to squat and stretch plus a bathroom break right on the side of the road. I am happy that I pushed the last mile and came in under 7:40 for the last 1.1m - at least I had that. Sadly my first 2 miles were also pretty good - 7:45,7:50 - so the rest was REAL SLOW. What would you do differently?: I am going to attempt to train a bit differently in preparation for Augusta 70.3. I want to end the year with a GREAT run off that bike and therefore I need to put in some HARD efforts more closely simulated to a race feel in order to know I can come off and run well. Post race
Warm down: Waded in the Choptank for a good 15min before heading back to get my recovery drink. Then I signed up for a massage and while I waited for my turn I grabbed a quick bite and found some of the other guys to catch up. After my massage I tried to relax in the heat before we decided to hit the road - a long 5hr ride home was not the greatest but what can you do. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training and maybe some mental weakness - probably a bit of both! Event comments: Another good experience at Eagleman. Really appreciate the volunteers who helped all of us manage our way through the misery - they are incredible for giving up there time particularly on a day like that! Woke up early packed stuff up, finishing touches on things and headed to transition. Weren't as early as we typically are but still had plenty of time. Set everything up and waited.
Stretched and loosened up a bit after taking a gel before the swim.
