Overall Rank = 159/204

Age Group Rank = 26/30
Pre-race routine:

Early cereal breakfast, then a banana prior to the race. No warm up swim but light run and stretching.
Swim
  • 16m 29s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

I swam well in the second half of the race, once it was more clear. The first half was tough, with waves and gasoline smell from rescue boats. Swim start was frustratingly delayed because the earlier HIM competitors were finishing at scheduled race start (same location).
What would you do differently?:

Start out more quickly and on the outside of the turn (right side). Use competitors as sighting throughout the race.
Transition 1
  • 05m 22s
Comments:

Rain made the transition tough, especially when towels were already wet...
What would you do differently?:

Baby powder in the socks and a place to dry place to stand.
Bike
  • 1h 32m 5s
  • 17.6 miles
  • 11.47 mile/hr
Comments:

I used my hybrid bike for better traction - and I had trained with it. The course was poorly marked, despite the many volunteers. I made a wrong turn (not the only one) and completed and extra 3.6 miles before getting back on course! Uggh. The course was longer than stated on this and other websites.
What would you do differently?:

Pre-learn the course and do hill training and power work.
Transition 2
  • 04m 18s
Comments:

I chose to change sneakers b/c of the rain - but that added time to dry off.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on transition, particularly mentally when tired. I should consider biking and running in the same sneakers in the next race.
Run
  • 34m 11s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

The extra mileage on the bike wiped me out, honestly. I walked about 4 minutes and had a tough time with mid-section cramps late in the race. I started the run at a good pace but lost energy
What would you do differently?:

Keep a steadier run pace and not bring a water bottle with me. Eat gel to gain energy as the run starts.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor cycling position and fitness. Rain.

Event comments:

I would join the race again but be better prepared for the hilly bike course.
