Pre-race routine:

I am not sure a swim meet makes for great race reports, but oh well, at least I will be able to read it in the future and remind myself what it was like.

I traveled all week so could not swim with masters. So yesterday, I went to a local pool and just started off swimming an 800m at a smooth pace to see what it would give. It was relatively smooth and the pace was good, so I figured the week off was probably a good thing. But an 800 and 1500 are two different beasts and I set my ambitious goal to break 24min for the 1500m.

Last April I did a PB of 24:50 long course. This was short course but I did not feel I had improved much since. At masters I find we do little for distance freestyle hence my belief I did not improve.

I suspected I would be very close to 24min and I did not want it to be 24:02 or something so close.

I did not eat anything. I had a big breakfast at 9AM and ended up swimming at about 3:30 in the afternoon. My tummy was grumbling on the starting block. Mistake.
Event warmup:

I did a slow 100m warm up, then tried a 200 at race pace. It was fine. So I swam a few more easy laps and did another 100 at race pace. I ended up swimming a total of 600m for warm up.

Comments:

I entered this race for 2 reasons. To see if there was any improvement since last April, and if so to get my Threshold pace for training. I have determined it to be 1:35 per 100m.

I was lucky. One of the coaches from my team was in the lane next to me and said if I followed him, I would break 24min. I tried following him and I did break it :-)

But he is about 5 inches taller than me and when he would push off the wall would get a huge lead, which I would have to fight back to get within reach. I need to do better turns. I flip, but do not streamline properly. I just gasp for air.
What would you do differently?:

Not be as nervous and worry less. The pain is only temporary and is quickly forgotten
Post race
Warm down:

None. Stupid. My arms are aching now

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More distance training needed.

Event comments:

Masters is a great way to measure progress. The meets are well organized and the team spirit is great.
