Swim
Comments: Well, even though this time includes a run into T1, it still is well below what I should be doing. I'm at my wit's end when it comes to swimming. I'm losing several places overall because of my swim. Several. I'm really frustrated with it right now. I'm just lucky that almost nobody else in the 40-44 AG can swim either, apart from the guy who went 7:08. Oh I so want to be like him! The thing is, the swim actually felt pretty good. I was never off line. I felt like I was going hard. I even caught a bit of a draft for the last 200m or so. And yet this. Ugh. What would you do differently?: I'm going to start swimming ridiculous volume and see whether that helps. Transition 1
Comments: Quickest in AG and close to the top overall. Transition area was quite long, but of course we all had to deal with that. I was fortunate in that my bike was reasonably close to the exit rather than the entrance. What would you do differently?: I could shave a few seconds, mostly by running a little faster, but this T1 was pretty good. Bike
Comments: All of the under-30s went in the wave before ours, so there was a lot of traffic to deal with on the course. I got around most of it without trouble, but was blocked a few times, mostly by people who had passed and then not moved over, and who apparently don't understand the phrase 'on your left'. I do try to say it nicely, but come on people, pass and get right! By around mile 11 the course had opened up a good bit. I probably eased up too much towards the end, but certainly the first 10 miles I was going pretty hard. Top in AG beat me by 6 seconds! Oh well. What would you do differently?: Keep the pressure on all the way to the end. Transition 2
Comments: I lost a few seconds running to the wrong rack. Yes, I am stupid. I actually racked my bike there then realized I was in the wrong place. Oh well. Otherwise T2 was fine. Still 2nd in AG and near the top overall. What would you do differently?: Pay attention to where I'm going. Run
Comments: I still am not running all-out, but getting closer. I felt pretty good about this run. I think that with another year of running under my belt, I'll be able to run in the neighborhood of the fastest guys here. I guess only time will tell. The course was short. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Once I'm fully healthy I'll lay it all on the line in these runs. Post race
Warm down: Food, drink. I did a little jogging just to get places because transition, finish line, and parking were all pretty far apart. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poker until 1:30 probably didn't help. Event comments: As ever, Setup did a great job with this race. The venue was nice, and the event was well run. I love it that their events are always on time. When they give you a time that something is going to happen (start, awards, whatever), it happens at that time. My one complaint would be: no cookies at the finish. What's up with that? I can eat an orange any time! I want COOKIES!!!! Last updated: 2009-12-09 12:00 AM

Well, I played poker and drank Scotch until 1:30am. I did at least manage to stop drinking Scotch at midnight. Went to bed at 2am and slept until 5:00, got up, ate some toast, and drove the 10,000 miles to the course.
I felt awful. After checking in and claiming my spot on the rack, I rode the bike course, hoping that some riding would make me feel better, and it definitely did. I swam about 200m in the lake (or was that a bathtub?). By the time the race was going to start, I felt good.
