Run
Comments: I felt like I ran under control, but I chose not to look at my watch until the end of the 5k, and when I saw the clock, I realized I probably ran it too fast for what was still to come. Only a mist during this time, with light wind from the east. I'm thinking the course MIGHT have been a little shorter than 5k. What would you do differently?: Check my watch at the mile markers and make sure I'm not going too fast. I was probably 40-60 seconds faster than I should have been. I'm calling this run "good" because it was a good run, I just think maybe I should have shown some restraint. Transition 1
Comments: My first transition went fairly well. I did stumble around a little bit because I had gloves on, so I struggled with the velcro straps on both my running and cycling shoes a bit. What would you do differently?: Think my process through for having gloves on. I should have taken them off while entering T1. I will also need to put Lock Laces on my races shoes. My current set-up, though at one time was a good set-up is not as fast as Lock Laces. Bike
Comments: It took longer then I would have liked to get my "cycling" legs. I didn't feel real confident until after the half-way point. Oddly, I think I had to battle the wind and rain head-on before I snapped out of it. (Rain and wind both picked up about 6k into the 30k bike and maintained throughout the bike segment). We had an east wind which was mostly a cross wind (which was challenging on the way back as it really caught my Head,3-Spoked wheels). There was a two mile stretch on the outer-most portion of the course that was directly into the wind and rain that was particularly difficult and a turn toward the end for about 1.5 miles that was a battle. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure. I'm not happy with how I did on the bike and I'm attributing this to running to quickly during the first 5k, but I could have been just lazy-minded. So, I guess, get and stay more focused and be willing to hurt more. Transition 2
Comments: I was smart enough to take my gloves off right away this time, but I still muddled around with my shoes. It was not cool putting on completely soaked running shoes. My racing flats felt more like winter boots. I also decided after I put my glove back on to leave them behind, so I had to double back a couple steps so I could throw them and have them land in my transition area. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think I did what I had to do given the circumstances. Run
Comments: My feet were heavy and sloshy. It felt like I was wearing snowmobile boots at first and my legs were cold and heavy as well. I started out with very short, choppy strides, which was fine except I felt like I was doing a shuffle when I wanted to get moving! As I ran my legs started coming back to me and my speed increased. I managed to get around the course and back to the finish line. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think I did what I could, but it wasn't real fast. Post race
Warm down: Ran over to the transition area to get my bag, to run inside the building to put some dry clothes on so I would become hypothermic. What limited your ability to perform faster: The weather, my lack of mental strength on the bike, and not calculating my efforts to balance them out. Event comments: This was a well run race with the potential to be fast. It's usually pretty competitive with people wanting to see where they stack up at this point. In the past it has had really nice weather and days like today (rain and wind). It's a nice race to see where your multi-sport fitness is early in the season and to remember the details of what it takes to execute a race. I didn't have a fantastic race performance, but I still enjoyed myself and am glad I did it. I'm sure I'll do it again. Last updated: 2009-12-10 12:00 AM

Ate breakfast (bowl of Honeynut Cheerios), took care of bathroom issues, rolled my calves on the foam roller, put my gear in the car and headed out.
Jogged and later did strides with Ryan (Haik). It was overcast during this time with some mist. It was a sign of the rain and wind to come later during the bike and second run.
