Pre-race routine:

(Overall rank is women only). I packed up my bag to check and walked to the Metro. When I arrive, I find my metropass is invalid and need a new one. So, I only had 3 bucks on me thinking I didn't want to check real money at the race. I put in the money and got a card, hoping the rides would be less. This whole rigamarole caused me to forget to eat my breakfast bar. Whoops! Walked from the station, across the national mall, and got in line.
Event warmup:

No warmup this time, although I only stood for about 10 mins before we started.

Comments:

Started out okay, but once I realized I hadn't eaten much (just a banana at the hotel) I worried. There was a good deal of sun - my nemesis - and the combo wore me out. That, combined with the fact I didn't taper, caused me to slow quite a bit over each mile. Started out strong, holding a 9:40ish pace overall, and was ratcheting away. But the last few miles I had to walk occasionally and just felt really heavy. The pace slowly ticked away from my goal. I psyched myself into holding a better pace for the last two miles and surprised myself by running up the last hill. Great spectators at that point! But I was SO GLAD to be done.
What would you do differently?:

I could have eaten better and been more rested. This was a training race for me, so I won't say taper because that wasn't part of the plan. I don't think I'll do this one again, but I am glad I took the chance and tried it. DC is an awesome place.
Post race
Warm down:

I sat and ate and stretched a bit, then took the metro back to the hotel. After a shower, we hit the city again and did a LOT of walking on a hot and sunny day. It was tiring, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Event comments:

The muffin and banana were just okay. For a race of that distance, I am used to a bit more food. I would have killed for an Ensure or something like that. They did give something like 97k to charity, so at least our money went to a good cause!

Course: Pretty flat, along the Potomic for a good while. Only a few blossoms left to see, sadly. Only real hills were bridges and then one nice hill at the end. That was awesome.
