Swim
Comments: Water was very cold when I first jumped in. It felt really nice during the swim though. I realized that I am not ready for an Olympic distance swim and I need more OWS practice. Also, after thinking back, I am not kicking enough. Maybe because the wetsuit keeps me more parallel I don't find it necessary to use my legs, don't know. What would you do differently?: Get more open water practice and use my legs more. Transition 1
Comments: That was a long and dirty run from the swim to bike. I got to my bike and took my suit off fairly quickly. Had to squirt feet with water and wipe them off before putting sox and shoes on. What would you do differently?: Can't think off anything right now. Bike
Comments: Course was crowded and made me laugh thinking how impossible it was not draft a little. I heard a lot of "On your left" and said the same quite a bit. I noticed a few riders passing "groups" on the right. I needed to do that also. I feel my riding is getting better. Still, those hills were tough going up and easy going down :-) What would you do differently?: Drink a little bit more and take nutrition earlier. Need to find a place to practice hills. Transition 2
Comments: Still riding with running shoes. Racked bike, helmet off, hat on and away I went. Run
Comments: I could not get my HR down. I forced myself to slow down but, it stayed in the high 160's to low 170's and this was a slow pace for me. Last race pace was 8min/mile. I think the heat was the main factor. Started run with a side stitch. It went away after slowing down even more and getting to the first water station. What would you do differently?: Run faster if possible. Post race
Warm down: Found some water and shade. Did some stretching. Dank more water. Gathered stuff and headed to pizza place to eat with wife and daughter. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat. Event comments: This was my second Tri. It was harder than the first (Gateway to the Bay). Heat and hills made it harder. Having three different race distances in one day made for a late start time and crowded bike course. If I do this next year plan is for Olympic distance and get hotel closer to event location. Fire alarm went off in hotel at 11pm. Scared the crap out of me and couldn't go right back to sleep. Finally woke up at 6am showered, ate a peanut butter and banana sandwich with some coffee. Arrived at transition between 7:15-7:30.
After setting up transition, walked around and watched some of the swim starts. Did some warm-up exercises and stretched. Then waited for my 9:40 start time.
