Pre-race routine:

Woke up a little nervous as this would be my first Olympic distance. Ate a little, got ready and headed down about 7am. Walked to the event and had no line for transition. Nerves had died down already by the time I made it there.
Event warmup:

Was getting set-up when they made the announcement that there was no swim. So just hung out and talked to teammates.

Bike

  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Used the first few miles to warm-up. Then stayed mostly comfortable the entire way. The announcer had said reports were headwind on the way out and tailwind on the way back in. So was enjoying the 20-21 on the way out in easy effort and feeling only a little wind. Made the turn and immediately knew the report was wrong or the wind had shifted/picked up. Dropped 3-4mph right away and had to push harder. Stayed with Nicole since we wanted to run together and she did a great job keeping us moving.
What would you do differently?:

Uh, get better.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

14/55 in T2 and I was one of the last racks which meant a lot of running with the bike so feel good about this!
Run
  • 1h 03m 36s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Nicole and I started and finished the run together since we run about the same pace. Made sure we didn't go out too hard. Walked every aid station and still came up with a decent pace for us. Great run - no knee pain - best I could have expected for myself.

I liked this course. It makes those of us slower runners not feel so alone when you're on a loop, but I can see how this might frustrate those trying to win AG as it's really hard to figure out where you are in relation to others. Support and volunteers were great - lots of aid stations.
What would you do differently?:

be faster, slimmer, work more? lol

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race and felt it was well done. It cost me a trip and hotel to attend and I would definitely do it again. I think it's overall a fun venue, well organized, lots of parking, and being at the hotel makes it so easy. One of the good things I liked is that it is really easily 'spectated' for a big race. You can view the run multiple times, see bike out - then go into the hotel for a break and come back later. The only things I thought were lacking were things that I don't really care much about/could easily be overcome -- the expo was so small and off to the side that I didn't spend what I normally would have there but again -- secondary and not at most races anyway. Pizza yum.
