Swim
Comments: Hey, I was happy knowing that I would finish within the cutoff time. I went to the wetsuit strippers--fun!! I like to try onenew thing each race and that was it What would you do differently?: bilateral breathing instead of breathing to one side. Now tat I know I can do the distance incorporate intervals into workouts. Transition 1
Comments: I took my time putting on my socks, helmet, race belt, and shoes. Grabbed my bike, thanked the voluntees, and walked my bike out of transition behind other racers. Just as I was clipped in and starting to pedal the guy immediately in front of me knocked his shoe off the bike and stopped dead in his tracks to pick it up while his bike took up the whole area. Crash avoided--I swerved around him!! What would you do differently?: Just move quicker, but I was enoying the day!! Bike
Comments: I avoided a crash on one of the downhills as a water bottle bounced around in front of me. Should I go to the left or the right etc. I was able to swerve without going out to the far left. I drank my water and Gaterade bottles that I started with and three gels. I was really unsure that I could grab a bottle from the volunteers!! Enjoyed seeing everyone passing me while I stayed on the right. I did manage to pass a few people--very few!! I'm not a big fan of speed so I ended up braking on the downhills. A few of the people passing had encouraging words for me. Took the chance to say thank you to all the volunteers who stayed out on the course throughout the rain!! What would you do differently?: I need to learn how to grab food/bottle from the volunteers. Need to push it a little harder on the flats/downhills. I really wanted to see if I could feel good on the run getting off the bike. I only was able to do one brick workout which was 20m bike and 2 mile run. Transition 2
Comments: Took my time once again. I switched my lucky rock from my bento box on the bike to my race belt for the run. My sneakers were socked from not puttingthe garbage bag over them from the first transition--yikes!!! What would you do differently?: Move faster!! Run
Comments: I was prepared for a walk. Again, I have suffered through some major knee and foot problems for the last year. Going to go for another MRI this week. I ended up walking the aid stations--there were lots of them. I was glad that I ran the hills and throughout the entire run. I saw a black cat in the middle of the run. When I yelled out,"please don't cross in front of me", someone yelled back that the cat had some brown on it. I drank at each aid station and never had to use the porta-potty. I kept waiting for some cramping or muscle tightening and it never came. My knee and foot bothered me throughout, but I was able to continue on with the walk/run. I was so happy crossing the finish line. I took it slow and even throughout the day and met both my goals. I throughly enjoyed the day and look forward to participating in the event again. What would you do differently?: I think if I can get my knee and foot heeled I can at least get back to my 9 minute mile runs. I use to love running and now I associate it with pain. Post race
Warm down: I had the biggest smile on my face coming through the finish line. Karyn, a friend, jumped into my arms screaming, "We did it." I went over to the food tent and ate a big plate of food. We packed up our transition, walked to the car and was out of Ellacoya in about 3 minutes and at the hotel in 15 minutes. Went out to dinner that evening and in bed at 9am. We were on the way home to NJ by 10am the next morning. What limited your ability to perform faster: Running injuries and my fear of feeling really bad on the run if I push it on the bike. Thinking I should train by heart rate. Need to practice the whole bottle exchange thing. Event comments: Great race with awesome athletes and volunteers!! Last updated: 2009-12-28 12:00 AM

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Tilton. We decided that we would park right at Ellacoya because we would be finishing toward the end of the race and not have to worry about not getting out of the lot. Woke up about 4am. The wakeup call from the front desk never arrived--thank goodness for cell phone alarms!! Left the hotel after having oatmeal around 3:45 and arrived at Ellacoya at about 4:05. Great parking--slept in car until about 5:30.
Ate my cliff bar and spoke with a few women in the transition area. I was relatively calm compared to the few days leading up to the race. I have suffered from Plantar Fasciatis and then a Baker's cyst--have not ran over 5 miles at a time since NYC marathon almost a year ago. No running more than 1X a week which was usually a 3 mile run. Thought I would walk the run, scared about the big hill on the bike course and of course the swim has always been my weakness. Goal from day one was to finish before cut off time and with a smile on my face. Both goals were accomplished. Went off in the 7:20 swim wave.
