Pre-race routine:

Camped overnight. The mosquitos were out in full force the night before so I turned in early 9:30. Woke at 6:15 am..got dressed..and headed to T2 to set up. Ate a pb&h on the way. Caught the shuttle to the swim.
Swim
  • 16m 2s
  • 700 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started out with a sprint for the first 25 yds..then settled into a good pace. Drafted for the first time on the swim..in between two people in front of me..great start. After the buoy I found that I had gotten off course..but watch was still considerably under my time goal so I didn't sweat it.
What would you do differently?:

Better sighting after the buoy..however the sun was in my eyes and I couldn't see the buoy for a lot of the swim..so I just followed the mass in front of me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 45s
Comments:

I forgot a towel at T1 (first time with two separate transitions) I was dripping and it threw me a bit. But all was well. I hopped on the bike and navigated my way through 4 people trying to get on at the same place..hoping that they wouldn't get going at the same time.
What would you do differently?:

Remember towel
Bike
  • 1h 29m 59s
  • 22 miles
  • 14.67 mile/hr
Comments:

My plan was to push for the entire bike. I think I stayed with my plan.. but the only hill on the bike up to the golf course kind of kicked my butt. I was down to 6 mph at one point. But..I really took advantage of the flats and down hills and pushed the whole bike. My goal was 1:30..so I came in a little over. But I'm still happy with my time.
What would you do differently?:

I have put on about 20 lbs since last year and it has shown in the hills. I know I could be much faster if I drop that weight.
Transition 2
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

I really felt the bike at this point. My legs were heavy and my breathing was labored.
What would you do differently?:

Not much..my plan was to push on the bike and just do what I could on the run.
Run
  • 45m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 14m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I was so hot and tired from the bike that I drank a little too much in T2..then again at the first water stop. I ended up with a cramp at mile 2..and never really recovered. I walked a lot more that I would like to remember and my heart rate was really high.
What would you do differently?:

I knew the run would be hard..but this race was to see what I could do on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a lot of water..walked around and stretched. There were a lot of Sharks there so I got to visit with a lot of friends. I had to work the festival that night..so I had planned on just going home..but when I checked the results I saw that I placed. I stuck around about an hour for awards but standing in the sun took it's toll and I had a pretty good headache by the time I got home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too much body weight to increase speed much.

Event comments:

The only thing I would change is to have the awards in the shade under the pavillion. That sun was brutal after racing as hard as we all did. Put some port a potties in the trailer camping area. I slept in my car at a friends site..but had I brought my trailer..I'd still have had to walk quite a ways to the john (1958 trailer doesn't have one.)
