Run
Comments: First time at a race of this size, which led to a slow start (not necessarily a bad thing). The first mile was a sea of runners and walkers heading through narrow roads ( construction ), followed by a couple of miles spent dodging slower runners. Around the 9 mile mark I had to switch to a run / walk combo. My wife was great with encouraging me to walk less and run more, but my legs were dead near the end. What would you do differently?: A couple of things: 1) Not get hurt in the middle of the training. Strained a muscle in my right calf which led me to taking off 10 days in the middle of an 8 week training plan. 2) Better with the nutrition. I should have taken in a GU before the race started, and then done better with the water / sport drinks. I sweat a lot and need to do a better job replacing the fluids. Post race
Warm down: Did some stretches and walked. What limited your ability to perform faster: The main issue was the lack of training. The time I missed with my injury had me missing a lot of miles on a relatively low mileage training plan. My goal heading into the training plan was a 10 min/mile pace, and I achieved that, so even though I walked I still met my pre-injury goal. Event comments: They had bands on the course to help entertain us during the run, but I don't think some of the were fully awake. The did a great job of calling out runner's names as they approached the finish line, and had water waiting for us as we exited the field. Free post race snack bags and massages were available. It's not much fun having a race on spring Daylight Saving Day. Since my wife was running the race with me, we had to find someone willing to babysit our boys this early in the morning. While my wife went and picked up the babysitter, I ate a piece of toast with peanut butter and drank some water. It was recommended to get to the race early (90 minutes before the start), since traffic and parking can be an issue.
After waiting in traffic (they weren't kidding), we then waited in line for the bathrooms. The race started and ended at Raley Field, the stadium for the city's minor league baseball team ( Go River Cats! ). There were people everywhere, but luckily the running group I had been training with had a tents setup with snacks and beverages, and a place for us to store extra layers we were not going to need on the run. I skipped eating anything else before the race started.
I didn't spend too much time on a warm-up. Did some walking to loosen the legs, but the plan was to do some dynamic stretching a couple of miles into the race.
