I ran about a mile or two with my wife early in the morning - which helped to loosen everything up. Once at the race, I did a few short pace runs and some light stretching

Comments:

Run went pretty well. I started about middle of the pack, to try to force myself to not go out too fast - and that worked just a little too well. I was shooting for 7'50" splits, and my first mile was 8'30" - and then I knew that my goal of breaking 48 minutes was in jeporady. With the large group of runners, and the narrow path, it was almost mile two before I could really start passing people without spiking my heartrate. Miles 2-3 were uneventful, I just tried to keep on pace, without elevating my heartrate, concentrating on "running efficiently". Water stop at mile 3, I grabbed a cup and dumped over my head to help cool down, and then started to try to pass runners. This was a pretty fast crowd, and I really had to work to pass anyone. At mile 4, I was at 33 minutes (8:25 minute miles). I knew I had to really crank up the speed to try to break 48 minutes. Mile 5 I was at 41 minutes, so I needed a seven minute mile to make my goal - which I knew would be damned near impossible. I pushed as hard as I could, but just did not have the aeorobic capacity to run that fast, at this point in the race.
What would you do differently?:

Start closer to the front. Since I'm in the middle of training for a marathon, I did not taper at all for this - I suspect that may have hurt my overall performance. Oh, yea, the 6 Corona's I had last night may not have helped my performance either.
Post race
Warm down:

A cup of water, finished of my gaterade, then a slow jog of another mile or so (my training plan called for 8 miles, so I jogged a mile before the race, and then a mile after to make the 8 miles).

Event comments:

Raffle prizes and awards really seemed to drag on and on. Other than that, it was a very well ran and organized race.
