Swim
Comments: Had a great swim - very little bumping, decent siting, good stroke - a great start to the event. Water was nice - alittle too warm if anything. What would you do differently?: Nothing - very pleased with my swim Transition 1
Comments: Better than my past T1's - felt good coming from swim. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Well, hills were as advertised I guess, but tougher than I could have imagined. It just was no fun at all for me. Managed my fluids and gels well, but the course really killed my legs. Glad I didnt try it before the race - I probably wouldnt have showed up. What would you do differently?: I thought I trained hills and used to think I was pretty good at climbing, but now I know differently. So, if I ever go insane and sign up for this again, I will do hill after hill after hill in training. Transition 2
Comments: Tried getting my feet on top of shoes prior to dismount - did ok, but alittle clumsy. Changed socks to try and keep feet alittle dryer - waste of time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Maybe practice some better techniques Run
Comments: This was my worst run ever. I ran a half-mar in Feb in 1:40 and felt great. I started this run with about 2 hours to meet my goal of a sub-6hr race, but I just couldn't do it. Very disappointed in my run - the hills broke my spirit and I just couldnt dig deep enough to complete in under 2hrs. I am sure the bike experience had alot to do with it. Need to think about how best to improve for future. What would you do differently?: Run faster? Train harder? Lose some more weight? I dont know. I was clearly not prepared. Post race
Warm down: Sat and drank my 1 bottle of water (what a ridiculous restriction on a day like this). Thought about a massage, but not enough energy to get in line. I felt like the finishers medal was a thirty lb weight around my neck. Limped up to transition, packed stuff, took a quick swim, then forced down some food. What limited your ability to perform faster: The hills and the humidity. If I am to compete at this level, I need much more training. I simply could not keep up on the bike or run. Happy with my age-group finish but just feel that I could have done better with more training. Event comments: Very well organized and great volunteers, but just too darn hard for me. I think the CeraSport drink was a bad choice - tasted horrible. Post race food was good - wish I felt better so I could have eaten more. Transition area was very congested - could have given more space in between rows. Overall, I was pleased with the event, but the hills were disheartening for someone of my level. Got up at 4am. Got out of the house about 4:20. Had peanut butter sandwich and cereal bar and coffee along the way. Had Gatorade and water. Got to park around 5:15 and got set up.
Short swim - didnt want to burn any calories figuring I would need everything. Watched the Pro's take off - very fast!
