Age Group Rank = 246/343
Pre-race routine:

went to bed around 9:30 and up by 3:00AM had everything organized so it was just a get up and go morning. Got to race site at 4:30 or so, met with Boom and Sally and after scouting the swim area we went to T for body markings, inflating tires and getting setup. This was odd for both of us as it seemed too simple. But turned out to be right. Went back to Swim start (about 1 mi from T) and pracaticed a few yards to get warmed up. Boom's wave was coming up as I came out of the water, just went there and wished him good luck; Javier was on the same wave.
Event warmup:

Not too much. Considering the haul (excessive) I was carrying, and the mi (each way) walk was pretty much a warmup.
Swim
  • 36m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a choppy swim, apparently, the course was changed a couple of waves after mine due to conditions, not sure if it was shotener or just rearranged.
What would you do differently?:

swim more, esp OWS
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Had to take a breather after that swim. Walked a couple of times en route to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice suit off (ankles stuck)
Bike
  • 1h 12m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.54 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Mainly turn back for anything dropped and lose 1 min rather than risk a 6 min penalty. Although I felt I had enough fluids, I think I may have had more energy on my system in prep for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

ended up racking bike on opposite end of the rack and had to run around it to get my gear. Avg change speed. Same long run/short exit
What would you do differently?:

Remember the side where my gear is located. I didnt have an issue finding my rack but with the side.
Run
  • 1h 04m 15s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

I was beat by the time I got to T2 but kept the course, I had to walk 20-25 yds a 4-5 times during the first 2 miles, although this added time, it allowed me to find the right pace for today. I had set GPS for 9:30 pace and thou I could keep it for the first half, I couldnt on half 2, no sweat! I didnt even have enough energy for a final kick as I usually do.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more energy fluids on the bike. This turned into a mind over matter mind game.
Post race
Warm down:

cold towel over head, and lg gatorade bottle. 10 min massage, followed by 2 slices of pizza, some OJ and some other snacks. Ah, 2 Ultras.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

energy

Event comments:

Performance: Average
Suit: Orca SOnar - sleeveless
Course: first 400 were easy although I stayed behind the first group and was caught up by guys from the slower group - I was freaking out. Then the waves astarted hitting after that point. Turned 500 to 1000 and there were waves but manageable. Once i turned towards 1500 things got ugly. I felt I was in a washing machine, no matter which way I tried to breathe I couldn't stop swallowing water. I couldnt keep a straight line and after spending way too much energy swimming in zig zag, I opted to just swim ahead and once I got close to the wall, or whetever I ended up, then swim towards the ladders. This was a better idea.

Course: Starting was odd, must have been the swim; I lost one shoe and a volunteer got it for me, then I run into the side barrier trying to get going. Once I was out there it took me a few miles to get in the zone but this was an awesome and flat course. Mostly straightaways with a few turns, shaped like "E". I almost missed the last hairpin and that set me back from the people I was chasing, no biggie. My focus was constantly "I need to catch and pass the tire in front of me". I passed a lot of people, then near mile 22 I dropped a gel pack and less than a minute later I noticed an official getting my number on his notebook. I ended up getting a 6:00 min penalty.
