Run
Comments: Started out a bit fast. First few miles were 6:25-30. I was fairly relaxed but I knew that it might be a bit too quick to sustain. Around mile 4 I consciously tried to get the pace into the 6:40s. That lasted until about mile 9 when my quads started getting pissed and angry. Had a couple of miles in the 6:50s. The last few miles I was pretty shot out and was running in the 7:15-25 range. The headwinds and hills didn't help, but my legs were screaming at me, too. I lost it a bit mentally around mile 8-9 because I thought I was fading fast and was worried about finishing standing upright! I got it together a bit before the end but my legs were just smashed. What would you do differently?: Start off slower. I should have ran 6:40-45 right off the bat. I was through 5K in 19:55 and 10 miles in 1:07:10 (6:42 pace) so obviously I went out faster than I should have. Post race
Warm down: Got some water and a bagel. Walked a tiny bit, and then sat down and did some light massage on my quads. What limited your ability to perform faster: Going out too fast. Not enough speedwork in training. I hit most of my long runs but didn't do enough tempo/speedwork. Alas, its a PR and it was a tough course and I'm pretty happy with it. Next time out, sub 1:30! Event comments: It's a lower key race. Late start is kind of fun. The course is largely inaccessible to spectators except for a few locations so you're out there by yourself for long stretches. Race started at 1pm so had to 'kill' the morning. Slept in as much as I could, then went to get a good breakfast. Then back to the hotel to lounge around til about 11. Then we went onto the W&M campus for packet pickup and lounged around some more in the arena where the finish was. Had a banana and some gatorade about 1.5 hrs before the start. Got ready at about 12:15.
Jogged for a mile, stretched, jogged a bit more, then went over to the start area, as well as the usual business.
