![]() Run
Comments: I'm not a strong downhill runner but made a concerted effort to not give up position on the first downhill to slower people. Paced it perfectly. Once the hills started I was on my own for most of the course, passing no one and getting passed by no one, except an occasional runner when I walked at the aid stations. I didn't check my watch until 52 minutes in when the eventual women's master winner passed me on a hill. I'm strong on the hills and was surprised she caught me. I couldn't hold her pace on the downhills but always closed back the gap on the hills. Together we passed a woman, then reeled in another guy who settled in between us. I felt I was pushing the pace on the hills a bit but they were too fast on the downhills for me to get in front. I was hoping to pass them as the final mile flattened out when a volunteer said we had only 1/2 mile to go. As soon as I had a clear line, I made a break for it. For a second I thought my pace was too aggressive and I might not be able to hold it, but I toughed it out and finished with a good solid kick. My core was strong through and can't remember taking a single misstep. Great race for me and a 4-minute PR over last year, which I thought would be my best race ever. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Ate a banana, then had to jet to a client's open house where surprisingly she had a couple of nutrition companies giving away free samples of recovery drinks! Event comments: I've been doing the long course LRTR for the past four or five years. Never had a bad experience. The Trailheads put on a great, green and friendly race. This is a must do trail run! Up at 6 a.m., small bowl of grape nuts, raisins, & vanilla soy milk. Coffee. Water. Was signed u for 7K but on the way out decided if I made it to check-in before 9 a.m., I'd try to switch to the 10. Check-in was great and allowed me to switch with a guy dropping down from 10 to 7K. Had about 15 minutes to warm-up & down 16 oz. regular Gatorade.
Run for parking lot to start with a couple of pick-ups.
